Opening Event of the 2013 Aussie Millions is Largest-Ever $1k Event in Australia!

When we previewed the 2013 Aussie Millions we said that we believed the festival would be bigger and better than ever before. There were some who thought that was just media hype, but if the opening event is anything to go by we were absolutely spot on with our predictions.

Day 1c of the $1,100 No Limit Hold’em event saw a staggering 677 entries, taking the total number of entries to 1,338 – of which 708 were unique players. This massive crowd helped to create a prize pool of $1,338,000 making it the largest-ever $1,000 buy-on tournament to be held in Australia! A round of applause should be directed to the players and the Crown Casino for hosting such an event.

As was the case on the opening two flights, 13 levels were played on Day 1c – the final starting day – during which time the huge crowd were whittled down to a much more manageable 71. The largest stack of these players belonged to Iqbal Ahmed, his 356,000 chips not only enough to see him become the Day 1c chip leader but seeing him be the man to catch when Day 2 begins later today.

Day 2 kicks off at 12:30 and will see 144 players return to their seats. Just 34 of these men and women will leave the Crown Poker Room empty handed as the top 110 finishers will be awarded prize money. A min-cash will see $2,500 paid out, while a final table appearance will net the players at least $13,500. The eventual champion will have their name written into poker’s history books and will also win $250,000 in prize money and receive a special Aussie Millions gold ring.

The plan for Day 2 depends on how quickly the players are busted out. The tournament staff would ideally like to play out to a winner, but if that cannot happen they will play down to the final table or thereabouts. With the likes of Rupert Elder (213,500 chips); James Keys (182,300); Martin Finger (162,900); Joe Hachem (133,900); Tom Grigg (94,900) and Brendon Rubie (78,700) among others still in the field, the tournament should be a very exciting affair indeed.
