PKR Heads Up Grand Slam Draw Provides Some Epic First Round Matches

Posted at 14:03 2009-09-25
The inaugural PKR Heads-up Grand Slam has been one of the more anticipated new events on the poker calendar and we are happy to inform you that the draw for this exciting event is now complete. Poker fans all over the world are in for a real treat with a who’s who of the world’s most talented poker players heading to London to take part in this headline event.

The draw has left us with some very exciting first round matches including epic battles such as 2008 WSOP Champion Peter Eastgate who will be taking on his Premier League rival EPT London winner Vicky Coren. Whilst this is going on, Academy Award nominated actress, WSOP bracelet holder and poker vixen Jennifer Tilly will be taking on one of our personal favourites ‘The Mouth From Down Under’ Tony G!

Much to the delight of the London crowd there is a much anticipated all British clash as John Tabatabai tackles the might of the Devilfish, and Luke ‘Full Flush’ Schwartz will have to bring his ‘A’ game if he is to trouble WPT Champ and recently crowned WCOOP Champs Yevgeniy Timoshenko. But perhaps the most mouth watering combination of all, sees one of the hottest names on the poker planet right now, Tom ‘Durrrr’ Dwan battle it out with WSOP Heads-up runner-up John Duthie. Duthie is about as good a heads-up player as you can find, but if Dwan is successful, then the crowd could be treated with a dream matchup with ‘Durrrr’ scheduled to take on his bitter rival Luke Schwartz in the semi finals.

The battle of the giants continues as Team PKR Pro James ‘james666’ Sudworth will take on crowd favourite Phil ‘The Unabomber’ Laak, and mega aggressive APPT High Roller winner Vladimir ‘Beyne’ Geshkenbein will face the highly respected online pro Alex ‘Kadabra’ Keating. Just to prove that a poker game is anyone’s to win, four lucky online qualifiers from PKR.com will get to take on poker’s ‘A-list’ superstars as they are matched against Antonio Esfandiari, Juha Helppi, David Williams, and Ivan Demidov in the first round.

Matchroom Managing Director Eddie Hearn commented, "There are some really exciting clashes lined up for the first round of the PKR Heads Up Grand Slam, but it's also interesting to see what could happen as the tournament develops.”

“In the top half of the draw, if Annette can overcome Ian Frazer and John Tabatabai can defeat the Devilfish, then they could meet in the second round for a rematch of the 2007 WSOPE final. The winner could face WSOP Champ Peter Eastgate in the quarter finals whilst Tony G and Ilari ‘Ziigimund’ Sahamies could face off in the other quarter final.  In the bottom half, Phil Laak or James Sudworth could face a tough test in the second round against Ivan Demidov, and Full Flush and Durrrr may well meet in the semis. The connotations are endless but each match will carry plenty of drama.”

The battle will take place from the 8th–10th October in London’s prestigious 3 Mills Studios and will be shown on Sky Sports in the UK and distributed to various International broadcasters.

Keep your eyes peeled for it as it promises to be one heck of an event!
