What a day!
We expected the main event of the Joe Hachem Deep Stack Series to be an action packed event and Day 1A didn’t disappoint!
It was action a plenty from all players with almost a quarter of the 330 players that threw their hats into the ring eliminated before the end of level 4! There were plenty of big names who took part today and there were a lot of casualties from our group of Australia’s elite. The man that this is all about, Joe Hachem, was eliminated today as well as his brother Tony, 2008 ANZPT Winner Grant ‘Grunter’ Levy , everyone’s favourite Billy ‘The Croc’ Argyros and Emad Tahtouh. We also lost online sensations James ‘Andy Mcleod’ Obst and Michael ‘TheBigSiCKO’ Guzzardi.
Not all pros bowed out though. Online players Dean ‘Dinhjo’ Nyberg and Jarred ‘FlopNutsOnYou’ Graham lasted throughout the day as did 888.com sponsored Australian sporting icon Shane Warne. Warne finished the day with 73,700 which whilst has him sitting comfortably for day 2 is a long way behind chip leader Sam Higgs who is sitting behind a gigantic 175,300 chips. Higgs’ stack size was helped along by busting out two players in the last hand of the day and he has certainly set the mark for the players of day 1B to chase.
Top 10 chip counts:
Sam Higgs - 175,300 Dean Nyberg - 167,900 Chris Chrisofi - 144,400 Vlatko Veljanovski - 133,000 Ning Pu - 131,000 Kent Hunter - 129,500 David Lee - 109,900 Ronald McWilliams - 108,000 Daniel Botta - 104,700 Bhavik Maneck - 103,800
There was certainly plenty of action the whole way throughout the tournament with players not fazed by the fact that this is a deep stack series. Players are quite happy to get their stacks in the middle regardless of how many chips they have in front of them, which can only mean exciting poker.
We can expect the same amount of fireworks tomorrow at 12.10 pm when day 1B kicks off. Considering that tomorrow is the last day that players can enter the tournament the turn out should be huge. Big name players such as Lee Nelson, Tino Lechich, Van Marcus, Jonathan ‘xMONSTERxDONGx Karamalikis and Jay ‘SEABEAST’ Kinkade are expected to hit the felt tomorrow as well as dozens more. It will certainly make for exciting viewing.
The main event wasn’t the only event that was played today. We also had the $2,700 High Rollers Tournament. After 88 of the nation’s best players entered the tournament and 15 hours of gruelling poker was played it was poker vixen Monica Nguyen from the Inner Western Suburbs of Sydney who would be crowned champion.
Nguyen was not afraid to get her stack in the middle at any point of the final table, highlighted by her call with queen-deuce off suit against Barry Forrester. Nguyen was not afraid to gamble when it was needed. They started at midday and at 3am after an intricate heads up battle with Kaz Jomeen, Monica Nguyen earned herself a $64,000 pay day as well as a beautiful trophy for her efforts capping off what truly was a remarkable day of tournament poker action.
