Posted at 22:08 2011-01-04
What a way to end the year! The Grand Final of the 2010 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour saw Australia’s finest joined by players from all around the world at the Star City Casino in Sydney. It was a huge two weeks of poker with some tremendous results in the preliminary events as well as a thrilling conclusion to the Main Event.
As players settled in for some Christmas turkey there was also a late surge by the Aussie forces online as several massive scores were brought down under just in time for some extra presents under the tree.
PokerNetwork continues to recognize the achievements of players in our community with the PokerNetwork Player of the Month awards for December.
Player of the Month – Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis
They say that the true test of a player is how they perform in a Grand Final. When the pressure is on, it takes nerves of steel and the focus of a champion to come through and claim the title. When the final table of the APPT Sydney Grand Final commenced, it was a star-studded affair with several talented Aussies, a previous APPT champion and one of the world’s premier players in PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu.
However rising above them all, proudly wearing the Full Tilt colours, was none other than Aussie cult hero Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis.
Showing relentless aggression and an air of unrivaled confidence, Jonathan dominated the final table to the roars of delight from his friends on the rail who would say he performed “like a boss”. Jonathan captured the attention of the poker world, the APPT Sydney title and a massive $459,510 in prize money.
Throw in another huge online month to see him maintain his place in the Australian online top five rankings, and Jonathan now has established himself amongst Australia’s most elite tournament players.
This previous “Young Gun of the Month” winner now adds the PokerNetwork Player of the Month award to his growing list of poker accomplishments.
Once who witnessed the power of Jonathan Karamalikis up close and personal was third place finisher Tom Rafferty. Primarily a cash game player, Tom has shown he has what it takes to compete on the big stage and in particular at the APPT Sydney Grand Final.
Back in 2008 Tom first came to prominence with a final table run that saw him eliminated in ninth place. With cashes at the Aussie Millions and APPT Macau Main Events in 2009, Tom returned to his beloved Star City Casino in December to push the high profile pros all the way with some impressive skill and immense composure. He picked up $164,730 for his efforts and we expect to see more of Tom on the tournament circuit in 2011.
Congratulations to both Jonathan and Tom!
With the year drawing to a close we congratulate the winner of the 2010 PokerNetwork Player of the Year, Daniel Neilson.
