A New Year brought with it the highly anticipated 2009 Aussie Millions where the talk of the town was whether an Aussie would finally capture the big one. It was a wonderful three weeks of poker at the Crown Casino with many remarkable achievements. There were many highlights in the preliminary events with several previous PokerNetwork award winners putting in excellent performances.
PokerNetwork continues to lead the way with the recognition of the achievements of our Australian and New Zealand players. The PAR leaderboard has been reset and will be fiercely contested throughout 2009 with Player of the Year and Online Player the Year awards up for grabs. This year will also see many more points available with the inclusions of APT, APPT, ANZPT and JHDSS as ranked events. We also will continue to honour the outstanding success of our players with our Players of the Month awards.
Player of The Month – David Steicke
Hong Kong-based Australian David Steicke has become a cult hero amongst the Australian poker scene for his unique brand of fearless power poker and extravagant fashion sense. It’s often said that the eyes are the window to the soul, but with David it appears that his thick-rimmed glasses are the window to an incredible soul-reading ability that we haven’t seen for some time.
While we have some fun with David, his record on the felt is impressive. Having been part of the poker scene for the past few years, David has already achieved a WSOP final table and numerous final tables on the APPT over the past two seasons. However he recently launched himself onto the world poker stage with his victory in the $100,000 High Rollers Challenge at this year’s Aussie Millions.
With twenty-three of the world’s best players hitting the felt including the likes of Ivey, Hansen, Guoga, Antonius and Juanda, some may have thought that Steicke was in over his head. However underestimate David at your own peril, as he once again proved that his success is no fluke with a combination of fearless aggression and a little flare. Once wielding a big stack, David was unstoppable as he bullied the best in the business in a commanding final table performance to capture the title and a healthy $1.2 million in prize money.
A tremendous performance and well deserving of the PokerNetwork Player of The Month award.
Young Gun of The Month – Stewart Scott
Finally the Aussie Millions title remains in Melbourne, thanks to the name on everyone’s lips at the moment, Stewart Scott, who overcame a field of 681 players to capture the first place prize of $2 million.
Stewart was prominent throughout the tournament, remaining near the top of the chip counts until he captured the lead entering the final table. From there Stewart maintained his momentum and when his pocket aces held against Peter Rho, the title was his! A marathon seven days of poker had been handsomely rewarded. Stewart’s name will forever be etched in Australian poker folklore as the first Australian to win the Aussie Millions title in the modern era and the first player to ever win $2 million on home soil.
