2008 PokerNetwork Players of the Year

Posted at 23:28 2009-01-09

The year has drawn to a close with many memorable moments and exciting developments in this game of poker which we all love. PokerNetwork thanks everyone for their continued support throughout the year and are proud to recognize the achievements of our players with the 2008 PokerNetwork Australasian Players of the Year awards.

This year we’ve been fortunate enough to witness the emergence of many of the young guns of the online world as they have transitioned seamlessly into the live brick and mortar setting. It’s exciting for the game in this country and it’s a matter of time before we see one of them hit success with a major title on an international stage, to follow in the footsteps of Joe Hachem, Mark Vos, Grant Levy and more recently Van Marcus.

However the old school brigade have also held firm and once again showed why they have enjoyed poker success in this country for not just years, but decades as Tino Lechich, Billy “The Croc”, David Gorr, Sam Khouiss and of course Sam Youssef all had memorable years on the felt.

Congratulations to the 2008 PokerNetwork Australasian Players of the Year award winners:

2008 Player of the Year: Sam Youssef
2008 Young Player of the Year: Jay Kinkade
2008 Ladies Champion: Helen Davis
2004-2008 Grand Champion: Sam Khouiss

Sam Youssef had an amazing 2008 capturing three major Australian titles to end the year well in front in the PokerNetwork Australasian Rankings and become our 2008 Player of the Year. His victories in the High Stakes events at the Melbourne and Victorian Championships were followed up with another title in the Six-Handed Event at the Big Game Poker Championships in Sydney for winnings in excess of $300,000 this year.

Jay Kinkade is our 2008 Young Player of the Year for his huge victory in the Main Event of the Victorian Championships where he netted over $200,000, combined with some amazing online results that saw him ranked as Australia’s #1 online player for the majority of 2008.

Our 2008 Ladies Champion is Helen Davis who overtook Kim Peart in one of the last events of the year to become the highest ranked female player in the PokerNetwork Australasian Rankings. Helen’s year was highlighted by a 4th place finish in the Six-Handed Event at the Victorian Championships. Helen also added a trophy to her cabinet in the $340 No Limit Holdem Turbo event during the Joe Hachem Deepstacked Series.

Finally Sam Khouiss becomes our 2008 Grand Champion for his consistent results over the last five years where he has earned more PAR points than any other player during this period. Sam had a fine 2008 with seven major Australian cashes including a runner-up result in the Bounty Event at the PokerNews Cup.

Each of the above award winners will receive a $1,100 live event ticket and we look forward to seeing them at a presentation ceremony to be scheduled in the New Year.

We also congratulate our Player of the Month and Young Gun of the Month award winners for 2008. These 24 players all had remarkable years and will be rewarded with entry into an exclusive invite-only freeroll tournament where they will compete for an $1,100 live event ticket.
