PokerNews Cup Championships Day 1 - Harry Ligos & Mark Casale Capture Trophies!

Posted at 23:29 2008-10-12
The 2008 PokerNews Cup kicked off in style at the bright and early start time of 10am with a huge field of 422 players hitting the felt in Event #1: $230 No Limit Holdem. With a $75,000 prize pool guarantee, the field exceeded this figure with a first place prize of nearly $18,000 up for grabs!
The field was full of amateurs taking a shot at the big cash however there were also plenty of notable players including Antonio Casale, Jozef Berec, Ivan Sop, George Cotaidis, Trung Tran, Marwan Nassif, Steve Topakas, Patrick Fletcher, Andrew Jeffreys, Michael Pinzone, Michael Chrisanthopoulos, Karib Karib and PokerNews Editor In Chief John Caldwell.
The action was fast and furious throughout, with players looking to double up or bust with the shallow stacks and rapid structure ensuring that players were forced to gamble it up. By level 7 more than half the field has disappeared, and by 6:30 p.m. the final table of ten was set.
Danny Tang took a slight lead into the final table but it was Albanian-born Australian Harry Ligos who dominated the cyclonic 75-minute final table to eliminate seven of his opponents through aggression, some gamble and a series of premium holdings. He overcame Michael Bancroft in the heads-up contest to collect the coveted title and first place prize of $17,732.
Final Table Results:
1st Harry Ligos - $17,732
2nd Michael Bancroft - $12,238
3rd Danny Tang - $8,440
