The opening day one flight of the PokerStars.net ANZPT Perth Main Event kicked off yesterday with 81 players hitting the felt of the Burswood Poker Room.

There were plenty of local hopes including Dale Marsland, Kent Hunter and Jimmy Wong, while the Eastern states were also well represented. Joel Dodds, Grant Levy, Aleks Brkovic, Sam Rotar, Tim English, Tim Marsters, Jarred Graham, Jeff Rossiter, Amanda De Cesare, Tom Grigg, Andy Hinrichsen, Ricky Kroesen and Hugh Cohen were amongst those who had flown across to the country for their shot at ANZPT glory. We also had a sprinking of International flare with Hong Kong’s David Steicke, American Alex Givotovsky and Swede Mikael Rosen who burst out of the blocks in remarkable fashion with a two-outer king on the river to claim an early double up and eliminate the first player of the day.

Hugh Cohen and Joel Dodds were involved in some entertaining clashes, with both players surviving in good shape while Tim Marsters, Ted Nguyen and David Steicke also amassed impressive stacks during seven levels of play.

However the day belonged to Queenslander Ricky “rickwaa” Kroesen who started off with pocket aces against kings in the early levels before flopping a straight with {9c}{6c} to crack an opponent’s pocket aces to storm into the chip lead.

Kroesen bagged up 109,400 as 47 players survived the day. Mikael Rosen (96,700), Mile Krstanoski (70,000), Tim Marsters (66,100) and local Chris Ngatoa (66,000) rounded out the top five.   Joel Dodds (45,400), David Steicke (38,000), Jimmy Wong (33,000), Tim English (32,300), Amanda De Cesare (28,200), Daniel Laidlaw (24,600), Sam Rotar (18,500), Grant Levy (18,200), Graeme Putt (16,300), Dave Allan (14,700), Matthew Pilat (13,300) and Andy Hinrichsen (12,400) will all see day two action.

Tomorrow is Day 1b with Team PokerStars Pros Tony Hachem and Bryan Huang expected to be in attendance as well as ANZPT Adelaide winner Octavian Voegele and Aussie Millions champ David Gorr. The action recommences at 12:30pm local time (GMT+8) with all the live updates brought to you by the PokerStars Blog.
