Not content with letting the Aussie Millions hog all the poker limelight in January, SKYCITY Adelaide will be hosting its own tournament series between January 22 and 28 and providing poker players with an opportunity to satellite into the 2007 New Zealand Poker Championship, being held at Christchurch Casino in April 2007.
The festivities start at 1pm on Monday January 22 with the free-entry NLHE event (rebuys and add-ons are $20 and double add-ons are $30). The tournament has a $1545 guarantee with the winner receiving a $660 entry to the New Zealand Poker Championship satellite final on January 27 and 28. Should the prize pool exceed the $1545 guarantee, the extra money will be distributed in cash among the top ten finishes.
Players have multiple opportunities to win their way to the satellite final with rebuy and freezeout tournaments running throughout the week. Two rebuy tournaments ($95 buy-in, $80 rebuys, $60 single add-ons/$100 double add-ons) will be held at 7pm on Tuesday January 23 and at 5.30pm on Friday January 26 with one entry to the satellite awarded for every $660 in the prize pool.
On Wednesday January 24, an $80 ($60+$20) freezeout will be run with up to six $660 final entries up for grabs. Additionally, cash prizes will also be awarded to the event’s top 10 finishers with the potential for an extra $500 in the pocket for first place.
For those who win a seat to the final or buy in to the $660 ($585+$75) event directly, entrants will be split into two heats with one group playing at 11.30am and the other at 5.30pm on Saturday January 27. This event is a freezeout and all players begin with a starting stack of 10,000 chips that they carry with them into day two play. Based on the amount in the prizepool, up to 10 entries to the New Zealand Poker Championship Main Event will be given away. As well as seats to the New Zealand championships, there will be a prizepool of up to $115,000 in size (based on a full-capacity event) with up to $14,000 for first.
During the series, there will also be a rebuy satellite to the SKYCITY Adelaide Championship Event, a $215+$30 Casino Employees’ event, $105+$25 Pot limit Omaha event and $150+$30 ‘Ladies Only’ no limit hold’em tournament. A special $335+$40 ‘Australia Day Cup’ will also be held with pot-limit play pre-flop and no-limit post-flop.
Looks like Melbourne won’t be the only destination for Australian poker players this January…
