PokerStars is celebrating the sixth anniversary of the Sunday Million on March 11, 2012, and for one-week-only the site has increased the guarantee of its flagship event from $1 million to $6 million, with at least $1 million going to the champion.
The event will kick off at its regular time of 0930 AEDT on Monday (1930 GMT Sunday) with a direct buy-in of $215. As always, players can qualify for a seat by using their Frequent Player Points or through a wide variety of reasonably-priced satellites. There will also be a special 1,000-seat guaranteed satellite running just before the big Sunday Million kicks off, with feeder satellites starting from only $1.
The PokerStars Sunday Million has been a staple in the industry since the first time it ran in 2006. Daryl "aaaaaa" Jace, an American poker pro, beat a field of nearly 6,000 when PokerStars launched the first Sunday Million on March 5, 2006. Jace took down $173,844 for his first-place prize, and since then, the Sunday Million has reigned as the most anticipated weekly tournament on the Internet.
Through last Sunday, there had been more than 2.1 million entries across 278 Sunday Million tournaments, with a prize pool of $444,149,600.
“My favorite memory of the big Sunday tournament on PokerStars is the time I finished 12th," Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier told the PokerStars Blog. "This was my first really deep run in a tournament of this size, and I was so excited. There is a huge Sunday Million on March 11, with $1 million guaranteed for first. It may not feel the same for me as the first time I went deep, but I'll be trying just as hard. See you there.”
