The Friday Flutter: Giddy Up, It's Time to Gamble

Posted at 12:58 2010-10-08

It’s hard to believe it, but we’re already up to our second Friday Flutter column. It seems like just last week, we were getting this thing off the ground. What a momentous occasion.

The weekend is finally here and it’s time to get your bet on! That is if of course, if you even took a break from getting money down during the week! This week was reasonably quiet for the high volume bettors with baseball’s regular season coming to an end, an international week in the soccer and the ice hockey and basketball seasons yet to start up. Thank god for Tennis in Asia!

Anyways the weekend will make up for it with a full dance card of degenerate goodness! The NHL season has just started up, and International Soccer Friendlies will go right through the weekend. There is a bit of Bathurst for the petrol heads, more Cricket from India, Baseball playoffs, American Football and the action on the track at the Spring Carnival is heating up.

Where is the PokerNetwork Punter Panel investing their hard earned this weekend?

Horse Racing: Spacecraft, Black Caviar and So You Think (Saturday Noon AEDT)

TV: Channel Nine

The Ponies are set to gallop around at the Spring Carnival this weekend and for punters there is plenty of action to be had. Snap up some Spacecraft for the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield this weekend. $7.20 on Betfair (Caulfield Race 6, #7) won't last long, so gallop over there and get in on the action. Sean Callander is the gift that keeps on giving this weekend though. He suggests you also take a running double of Black Caviar in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (Caulfield Race 4, #6) into So You Think to get the cash in the Yalumba Stakes (Caulfield Race 5, #6).

Bathurst: Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife (Sunday 9:00am AEDT)

TV: Channel Seven

It will be a very different kind of racing on Sunday as all eyes turn to the Thunder on Mount Panorama, as the V8s rumble into town for their annual showdown in the season’s showpiece event. Bathurst has a Grand Final like atmosphere to it and a lot of Aussies who otherwise don’t watch the V8 Supercars will sit down and check out the action. Why not get some money down on it too? Our crew likes the 888 Car of Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife. Even though they are the public favourite and taking a lot of the action so far we think they will once again be Kings of the Mountain, you can win Bathurst too by backing them at Betfair.

NFL: Baltimore Ravens -7 vs. Denver Broncos (Monday 4:00am AEDT)

TV: One HD (Delayed)

The Broncos head to the east coast to take on the Baltimore Ravens in what is sure to be a defensive showdown. The Ravens are renowned for a defence that wins games and it should be no different here. While some aren’t impressed with Ravens QB Joe Flacco, he finally showed a bit of touch on the weekend. Denver on the other hand could have their season go anywhere from here. At 2-2 they are poised on the edge of a double edged sword and this game could set the tone for the rest of the year. The Broncos will bring it, but they just don’t have the defence to ball with the Ravens. Lay the full touchdown at William Hill or PartyBets to make some bank.

Best of luck to you if you do decide to have a bet and don’t forget to tune into the PokerNetwork Sports Betting show with Brendan Duffy, Damien Oborne and Pete Marcato for more hot tips this weekend!
