Unique Touch For New Zealand Poker Championships

Posted at 14:35 2009-04-01
Uniquely commissioned pounamu is what is catching everybody’s attention in the land of the white cloud at the moment as The Christchurch Casino is using it to showcasing New Zealand culture throughout the New Zealand Poker Championships.

West Coast carver Ian Boustridge has been commissioned by Christchurch Casino to create some spectacular pounamu trophies for the New Zealand Poker Championships, this iconic gesture will link a unique symbol of Kiwi culture to one of their major poker tournaments. This ensures that all competition winners will keep a little piece of New Zealand with them no matter where they come from.

The poker players really enjoy the experience at the New Zealand Poker Championships so what better memento then a pounamu trophy? Just ask Christchurch Casino Chief Executive Brett Anderson:

“We have many domestic and international competitors that come to be part of the New Zealand Poker Championships not only for the chance to win, but for the experience they have here; it’s a uniquely New Zealand experience”.

“The trophies were designed to ensure competitors take away a piece of New Zealand with them and are proud to have them on display – they’re the types of trophies that people will ask about”, continued Anderson.

This is not just a fantastic thing for the poker players, carver Ian Boustridge was very happy with the opportunity to carve trophies for such an event. “The New Zealand Poker Championships are a great opportunity to celebrate what makes our culture unique from all others; pounamu lends itself perfectly to this”, says Boustridge.

On top of the trophies, Boustridge is adding to the culture connection at the New Zealand Poker Championship with his awe inspiring ‘Maungapounamu’. Weighing in at over two tonnes, Maungapounamu was carved from a massive pounamu boulder recovered from Fiordland over a decade ago.

Boustridge carved Maungapounamu into peaks and troughs, resembling the mountains, lakes and rivers of New Zealand’s South Island.

Maungapounamu is on display in Christchurch Casino’s foyer for viewing and touching throughout April.  So if you are in the area we strongly suggests that you get in and have a touch.

The New Zealand Poker Championships are currently underway at Christchurch Casino, with the NZ$3,000 Main Event kicking off on Thursday. With plenty of big names in attendance it is sure to be a spectacular event.
