THE YEAR THAT WAS 2007

2007 was a big year for Poker Downunder with some very significant events leading up to another successful 2008 Aussie Millions. However, the face of tournament poker Downunder has changed forever and the reign of the “Milky Bar Kids” has commenced in earnest. The school of hard knocks has been replaced by online poker and the graduates are all cum laude. Neither the WSOP nor the Crown Aussie Millions will ever again be dominated by veteran road runners. The Note Book has replaced the home and backroom game.
The Crown Aussie Millions 2008 results, where newcomers and onliners starred, leaving the pros and veterans behind, is a measure of what is to come. The Pressure of playing with your own bankroll has been reduced by the availability of cheap satellite entrance and without bankroll advantage the pro has no significant juice. To some extent the Passion of the big name pros has also been reduced by extravagant sponsorships and TV coverage. The hunger to win has disappeared from a table of plenty? One big name veteran pro (Eric Seidel) on the 2008 Main Event final table of 7 against the other six relative newcomers and low limit players (five of them Australians) is testimony to this.

to see how the Downunder players have excelled in all events. The Crown 2008 Aussie Millions can be seen as a coming out party for local players on the international stage. From the humble beginnings in 1997 to its present standing, Crown has now generated the biggest international poker event outside of the Americas. It won’t take long for Sydney to follow?
Other events also contributed to a major year for Poker Australasia. 888 Poker
Former Pokernetwork and Pokernews executive Gaz Edwards pulled a major coup with the enlistment of Shane Warne as their “Poker Ambassador” for local and international events. Never before has a poker site enlisted the aid of such a high profile sportsman to promote the game of poker. Well done Gaz and 888. You will continue to see 888 on both Pokernetwork and Pokernews pages.
Poker in other Casinos.
This year we welcomed Burswood, Adelaide and Star Sydney to the PNW Australasian rankings. Sydney topped this all with a magnificent Pokerstars AAPT Million dollar tournament. It was the first megabuck game outside of Crown. When Canberra comes back to the fold with Jupiters and Treasury we will have all fields covered. The future health of Poker depends on the involvement of all States.
Pokerstars and AAPT Sydney
Sarne and Pokerstars set up the first Australasian International overseas tourney with the Manila, Seoul and Macau AAPT, culminating in the Sydney event, won by local newcomer Grant Levy. Sydney, if it chooses, would have the capacity to challenge Melbourne as the Poker leader. 2008 will be an interesting year for big poker tournaments
Pokernews live coverage of the WSOP and the Crown Aussie Millions (CRAM)
Following its sensational live coverage of the 2007 WSOP, Pokernews Limited has brought John Caldwell and the team Downunder for the Aussie Millions and associated tournaments at Crown. We can look forward to this as an ongoing feature of the Millions.
In association with this, PNL has established an ongoing Pokernews Cup for competition at Crown in September each year.
The online Champions
A feature of all major B&M Casino competitions this year has been the success of the “Online Milky Bar Kids”. Ongoing proof of the pudding that ‘Practise makes Perfect’(even online). We will be seeing a lot more of this in the coming year.
Crown Casino Player of the year.
For the first time since inception of the room, Crown has commenced a “Crown Player of The Year” competition with a very attractive prize. At the half way point the competition is intense for the final count at the end of June.
The Pokernetwork Australasian Players of the Year
Bragging rights for the Player of the Year and the month have been jealously guarded over the years. This year 2007, apart from the trophies, an entry in the Pokernews Cup Main event at Crown has been sponsored by TonyG. The winners Jozef Berec, Lee Nelson, Grant Levy and Tanya Hill will be presented during the Hash Series in February. In addition the Players of the month will also fight out a Freeroll for another seat.
The upgrade of the Pokernetwork web site.
“Pokernetwork is pleased to announce the appointment of Heath Chick to the team. Heath will be responsible for the day to day management of the Pokernetwork site including online activities and the Notice Board promotions. He will also oversee the new upgrade to the site. Heath is a well known Australian player and member of our poker community. He fits in well with the combined Pokernetwork and Pokernews team and looks forward to the challenging period ahead.” Accompanying this staff increase is a major upgrade to the Pokernetwork site allowing a more significant support to online activities.
Bluff Australasia in support of Downunder Poker.
Since its inception two years ago Bluff has been a major support to Australasian Poker activities. The Crown Aussie Millions supplements are major publications in support of offline Casino activities and tournaments.
The year 2008
It is difficult to foresee what more can be achieved in our poker calendar but the following events have been locked in subject to Casino availability. They will be ranked for PNW points.
Crown Aussie Millions 2008
New Zealand Championships Christchurch
The Melbourne Championships Crown
The Victorian Championships Crown
The Pokernews Cup Crown
And other Casinos to be scheduled during the year
NSW Championships Star Sydney
SA Championships Sky Adelaide
WA Championships Burswood Perth
We can only hope that this year with the popularity of Poker in general, that Casino Canberra will restart their very popular National Championships and that Jupiters and Treasury may commence a Gold Coast and Brisbane Championship. Love to see it.
(The above are ranked events SHOULD THEY PROCEED.)
Of course we are all wondering whether the numbers can be maintained locally in our Australian States and for the WSOP in Vegas. In many ways the popularity of online Casino activities will govern this. We can be sure the game will wax and not wane.
