Tony G Looming Large on Day 2 of WSOP $50k HORSE

Posted at 20:52 2009-06-28
Tony G is looming large as a threat in the $50,000 HORSE, after a charge up the leaderboard on day two. Starting the day with almost half his original tournament starting stack, The G unleashed “the powah” throughout the day to finish up 9th in chips with 433,000.

Day two would see 91 players of the 95 total entries return to the felt in the hopes of claiming the prestigious title. By the time the players bagged and tagged their chips a third of the field would no longer be in the running.

Notable day two eliminations included Jennifer Harman, Gabe Kaplan, Greg Raymer, Justin Bonomo, Max Pescatori, John Juanda, Eli Elezra, Johnny Chan, Mike Matusow, Andy Bloch, Daniel Negreanu, Howard Lederer, Annie Duke and Australian Jeff Lisandro.

With Lisandro’s elimination, two of the original three Australians would be left in the field, with Tony G riding high, and Jason Gray finding some momentum late in the day after flirting with elimination early on. Gray dropped as low as 35,000 chips before fighting his way back to finish with 144,000 chips.

One of the highlights of the day was Gus Hansen getting on an amazing run during an Omaha Eight round, according to a Howard Lederer “tweet” the Great Dane picked up 250,000 chips in just eight hands. All up Hansen finished on 686,000 chips to be in the chip lead, just ahead of a late surging Ray Dehkharghani. Dehkharghani started the day with just 50,100, and finished it with an amazing 643,000.

Hansen will be looking to hold off the challenge of Dehkharghani, Todd Brunson (549,000), defending champion Scotty Nguyen (463,000), David Bach (451,000) and Tony G (433,000), amongst a throng of challengers. Day one chip leader Hasan Habib was also thereabouts finishing in the top five with 490,000 in chips.

Day three is scheduled to resume at 7:00am AEST on Monday Morning, with 53 players returning. Level 12 will see limits of 8000/16,000 (8,000 big blind for flop games) in most games, with the average stack currently 270,000.
