Vakili On Top With 32 Left In Sydney

Posted at 01:38 2010-12-11

At around midday 163 players combined from the three day one flights to play out day two of the APPT Sydney Main Event. After 12 hours of action just 32 players were left with chips in front of them and now all of them are guaranteed at least a minimum cash of $12,145.

The list of players left in the tournament boasts some impressive names including two of Australia’s top online talents right near the top of the counts. Circuit regular Reza Vakili (775,000) leads the way, but right behind him are the two young online stars Jonathan ‘'xMONSTERxDONGx’ Karamalikis (733,000) and Brendon ‘Brendooor’ Rubie (690,500). Full Tilt Poker professional Roland De Wolfe (715,500) is also in the hunt currently third in chips.

The 32 remaining are brimming with talent from top to bottom with notable names like Tom Rafferty (441,000), Mitch Carle (407,000), Daniel Negreanu (293,500), Jarred Graham (254,500), Tyron Krost (94,500), Grant Levy (81,500), Eddy Sabat (60,000), and Con Angelakis (47,000) all bagging up chips at the end of the day.

One man who won’t be joining them tomorrow is Ali Khalil who would bubble his hometown tournament in cruel fashion. The popular Sydney based player looked down to find Kings and pushed all in for 140,000 chips over a 20,000 chip opening raise from Brendon Rubie. There was no thought from Rubie who instantly snapped his friend off turning over Aces. Khalil did not improve and an {Ac} on the river salted the wound just a little more.

If Khalil wanted to swap war stories he could always find one-time tournament chipleader and current PokerNetwork Player of the Year leader Daniel Neilson at the bar. Reza Vakili would claim Neilson’s scalp late in the day’s play, but it wasn’t without a liberal dose of luck. When the cards were revealed before the flop, Neilson’s {Ah}{Js} was well in control against Vakili’s {Kh}{jc}. All was on track for a Neilson double through until the floor exploded with a roar as the {Kc} spiked the river.

Day three will start at 12:30 p.m AEDT. The day will see the field play down to the final table of eight. You can tune in live to the PokerStars.net APPT Sydney Grand Final Webcast right here on PokerNetwork. Paul 'The Voice' Khoury will be hosting and will be joined by a number of local and international stars to bring you all of the action on the felt throughout the day.
