WSOP Round Up – Aussies Rake in Over $3M in Cash

Posted at 07:00 2006-08-18

Note: A big thank you to Gary Boxell for keeping endless spreadsheets of all the Aussies that cashed in this year’s WSOP. Much of the material in this article was derived from his hard work. Well the 2006 World Series of Poker has wound up, and whilst Australia couldn’t produce a Main Event champ for the second year running, the largest Aussie (and NZ) contingent ever certainly made their mark. This year, a total of 37 “Aussies” cashed 65 times for a total of $3,295,019 in prizemoney. Out of the 65 cashes, ten were at final tables, and almost half of the Australians that cashed did so more than once. Here’s a recap of some of the stellar performances from this year’s WSOP. First mention goes to the one and only Australian bracelet winner from this year’s WSOP – Mark Vos. Mark captured the bracelet for Event #6 $2,000 No-Limit Hold’em and $803,274 in prizemoney when he defeated Nam Le heads-up. Mark also cashed in the Main Event, placing 457th for $26,389. He was also the highest earning Australian at this year’s World Series of Poker. The most cashes went to Tony G with six. Tony came 84th in Event #5 $2,500 Shorthanded No-Limit Hold’em ($3,790), 22nd in Event #14 $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em with Rebuys ($11,589), 68th in Event #21 $2,500 Shorthanded No-Limit Hold’em ($4,255), equal 11th in Event #25 $2,000 No-Limit Hold’em Shootout ($4,805), 13th in Event 26b $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha with Rebuys ($10,897) and 9th in Event 34 $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em with Rebuys ($46,805). Sarah Bilney was not far behind with four cashes. Sarah jumped out of the blocks early, coming 44th in Event #3 $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em ($6,017), scraping into the money in Event #7 $3,000 Limit Hold’em (equal 46th, $1,718), and then turned in her best performance by coming 12th in Event #13 $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em for $50,439. Sarah also cashed in Event #37 $1,500 No Limit Hold’em, and took home $9,183 for 50th place. Defending champ Joe Hachem proved to everyone that his first year wasn’t a fluke, also cashing four times and making two final tables. Hachem came perilously close to collecting his second bracelet, when he finished 2nd to Dutch Boyd in Event #5 $2,500 Shorthanded No-Limit Hold’em ($256,800). Hachem also finished 15th in Event #18 $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em ($9,664), 4th in Event #29 $2,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em ($90,482), and impressed in his title defence, placing 238th in the Main Event for $42,882. Jeff Lisandro is one of the most feared cash-game players, but is also equally adept at tournaments. Lisandro was another Aussie who cashed four times at the WSOP, he came 9th in Event #7 $3,000 Limit Hold’em ($22,908), 15th in Event #26b $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha with Rebuys ($10,897), 19th in Event #33 $1,500 Seven Card Razz ($4,466), and was the highest-placed Australian in the Main Event, placing 17th for $659,730. Michael “Sticky Micky” Guttman cruised into Vegas and promptly made the final table of Event #16 $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, coming a very close second to Lee Watkinson and collecting $655,746 in prizemoney. After a day off, Guttman entered Event #21 $2,500 Shorthanded No-Limit Hold’em and was still there three days later when the final table started. He eventually finished 3rd, and collected $139,564 – not bad for a whirlwind stopover. Special mentions go out to the other Aussies that made final tables – Marsha Waggoner (NZ) – Event #1 $500 Casino Employees No-Limit Hold’em, 8th ($13,860), Emad Tahtouh - Event #32 $5,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em, 7th ($71,064), and Marcus Collins – Event #44 $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em, 5th ($39,394). And another mention to the thirteen Australians that cashed in the Main Event – outlasting over 7,900 players is no mean feat.
