"Champion Jarred 'FlopNutsOnYou' Graham"
September 13, 2009
Congratulations Jarred 'FlopNutsOnYou' Graham, Winner of $1,650 Sydney Championships Main Event ($121,500)
Three days ago 324 poker junkies, professionals and amateurs took to the felt in Star City's first major hometown championship.
Some of Australia's best tournament players handed over $1,650 to see if they could walk away with their piece of poker immortality. Grant Levy, Daniel Kochan, Joel Dodds, Sam Youssef and Eric Assadourian were just a handful of names that were unable to make it the final nine, let alone the money.
When play began today it was Milan Gurung leading the charge followed closely by Stephen Donlon and Sheldon. After an initial slow start to the final table, one of the chip leaders in Donlon would be first to go followed by a string of others before play slowed up once again.
Eventually however it would by arguably Australia's best all-round young player in Jarred 'FlopNutsOnYou' Graham who would use a mix of patience, aggression, class and above all skill to emerge as the most dangerous threat as he snatched the chip lead.
As crowd favourite Sheldon headed to the rail, Graham would continue his dominance, mixed with some tough luck, before reaching heads up play against Peter Zabow with a near two-to-one advantage.
Graham started strong until Zabow started to claw his way back into contention before the last hand where Graham's straight draw and middle pair would improve to trips on the river to dispatch of Zabow.
Not only is Graham's pocket an extra $121,500 heavier, but he is also the owner of the coveted trophy and can now add Sydney Championships Main Event Champion to his poker CV.
PokerNetwork would like to congratulate Jarred for his great display of tournament poker over the last four days, and for you at home thank you for following the coverage from Star City and the Big Game Poker Sydney Championships.
In exactly two weeks you will find the PokerNetwork team working the floor on behalf of PokerNews for the third instalment of the PokerNews Cup Australia live from the Crown Casino.
Until then . . . goodnight from PokerNetwork and Star City . . . and may your Aces run into Kings, sets into two-pair and your triple barrel bluffs remain uncalled!
