Albert Amato Wins Victorian Poker Championships ($190,050)

Written by TassieDevil, 2009 08 18 12:01 am EST

After a grueling four days of poker, Albert Amato has emerged from a field of 342 of Australia's best to be crowned the 2009 Victorian Poker Championships Main Event Champion.

It was a wild ride at times, with Amato enjoying the fantastic structure offered by this event to sit tight and wait until his moment to strike. One moment that was mis-timed was when he ran his pocket fours into the pocket kings of Jason Gray, only to spike the case four on the river to stay alive. But to win a poker tournament you need a little slice of lady luck occasionally.

Albert Amato showed a wealth of composure, class and skill to claim the trophy and $190,050 as a deserving winner.

Thanks to Jonno Pittock and his Crown Poker staff for another wonderful championship series. The PNW crew will now be heading over to Macau to bring you the start of the Asian Poker season with the APT Macau and APPT Macau events brought to you on PokerNews.com. We look forward to your company then!

Kane Sherwell Eliminated in 2nd Place ($129,100); Albert Amato Wins!

Written by TassieDevil, 2009 08 17 11:50 pm EST

Albert Amato limped the button before Kane Sherwell popped it up another 200,000 from the big blind.

They took a flop of {7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and Sherwell made a bet of 400,000. Amato made the call.

The turn was the {9-Spades} and Sherwell paused before announcing he was all in! Amato snap-called and the cards were tabled.

Sherwell: {6-Clubs}{6-Hearts}
Amato: {7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Sherwell had a pocket pair but Amato had caught two pair on the turn to leave Sherwell clinging to just two cards in the deck to stay alive. We'd seen him get out of jail on several occasions during this tournament, but it wasn't to be as the {K-Spades} bricked on the river and Albert Amato wins the pot to be crowned the 2009 Victorian Poker Championships Main Event Champion!

Congratulations to our runner-up Kane Sherwell who entertained with his bold, fearless approach to take home a very tidy $129,100 in prize money.

Amato Hits The Lead

Written by TassieDevil, 2009 08 17 11:43 pm EST

Albert Amato had certainly gained the momentum and now he has also gained the chip lead after a huge pot was just pushed his way.

Amato raised the button to 155,000 before Kane Sherwell made it 300,000. Amato made the call and they went to a flop of {9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}.

Sherwell fired out a bet of 400,000 and Amato made the call. The turn was the {10-Clubs} and Sherwell announced 500,000 with Amato beating him into the pot with a call.

The river was the {8-Diamonds} and both players checked it down.

Sherwell tabled {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a pair of nines but Amato showed {Q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for two pair to collect the pot. Amato is up to 5.1 million with Sherwell slipping to 3.45 million.

Sometimes The Cards Are Just That Bad

Kane Sherwell is in his first big heads-up match here tonight, and since the double up of his opponent, he has made a couple of small mistakes and appears visibly frustrated at the table.

In a recent hand Albert Amato reached for chips to make a call from the button, and before Amato had even tossed the chips into the pot, Sherwell had tossed his cards into the muck.

Albert Amato limped the button and Kane Sherwell checked his option in the big blind.

The two players checked down a board of {A-Clubs}{8-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{K-Spades} until the river where Sherwell checked to Amato who fired 100,000. Sherwell made a quick call.

Amato tabled {K-Clubs}{4-Clubs} for a pair of kings, as Sherwell accidentally flipped his cards on the way to the muck and showed {J-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for the jack-high call down.

The Cracks Appearing?

Albert Amato raised to 230,000 from the button and Kane Sherwell made the call in the big blind.

They went to a flop of {4-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{K-Spades} and both players checked. The turn was the {A-Diamonds} and Sherwell led out for 200,000. Amato then announced a raise of an additional 500,000. Sherwell made a frustrated fold, flinging his cards across the table as the chips were pushed to Amato.

Written by TassieDevil, 2009 08 17 11:20 pm EST

Albert Amato raised it up to 325,000 from the button and Kane Sherwell made the call in the big blind. They went to a flop of {3-Spades}{4-Spades}{5-Spades} and Sherwell open-shoved all in. Amato made the call for his last 1.345 million chips.

Amato: {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Sherwell: {Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

Amato's pair was in front as Sherwell was on the draw. The turn was the {9-Spades} bringing the possibility of a chop, but the river repeated the {5-Diamonds}.

Amato's hand holds up and he finds a much needed double up to around 3.5 million chips.
