Congratulations To Matthew Ephraums, Winner Of Event 1: $1,100 Opening Event ($200,025)

Written by thkcduckworth, 2010 01 18 05:50 am EST

Following four gruelling days of poker that included an eighteen-hour final day, we have finally crowned the 2010 Aussie Millions Event 1: $1,100 Opening Event Champion!

1,143 hopefuls took to the felt over the course of the tournament, but when the dust had settled and the eyelids were dropping, only one remained.

Matthew Ephraums began the day with a healthy chip stack, and from the get-go he slowly accumulated with patient play, smart decisions and timely moves.

However there are always losers in poker, and today Brent Thomas, Trung Tran and runner-up Brendon Edmonds were unfortunate not to be standing in Matthew's place.

Not only is Matthew taking home the $200,025 first prize, but he is also the proud owner of an Aussie Millions ring to commemorate his outstanding play and title of Event 1 champion.

Wrapping up our coverage from the Crown Poker Room; on behalf of PokerNetwork and Bet 24/7 - The Sport of Winning, we would like to thank you for following our coverage and that hopefully you will join us next time.

Until then, may you run Aces into Kings, flushes into straights and that all your bluff's remain uncalled!

Brendan Edmonds opened the button to 300,000 only to have Matthew Ephraums re-raise to 1,000,000 total.

Edmonds announced he was all in and Ephraums made the call.

Edmonds: {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Ephraums: {A-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

The flop of {3-Spades}{3-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} put a near lock on the hand for Ephraums, and when the turn and river fell the {6-Hearts} and {7-Clubs} we lost Edmonds in second place while Ephraums is the Event 1 Champion!

Brendan Edmonds limped the button before calling an additional 200,000 from Matthew Ephraums.

The flop fell down {2-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and Ephraums led out for 400,000. Edmonds made the call to see the {4-Hearts} fall on the turn and a bet of 600,000 follow from Ephraums.

Edmonds called and checked the action to Ephraums when the {8-Hearts} fell on the river. Ephraums pushed out a bet of 500,000 only to have Edmonds move all in. Ephraums made the call for his 2,635,000 and tabled his {J-Diamonds}{9-Spades} for a rivered straight to best Edmonds' {10-Spades}{6-Spades}.

As Ephraums raked in the pot, he climbed to 8,000,000 as Edmonds slipped to around 3,000,000 in chips.

In a limped pot Brendan Edmonds checked a {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{6-Clubs} flop to see Brent Thomas splash the pot with a 125,000-chip bet.

Edmonds made the call, and then checked when the {9-Hearts} landed on the turn. Thomas fired out 150,000 and Edmonds put in a check-raise to 500,000 which Thomas called.

The river landed the {3-Diamonds} and Edmonds moved all in with Thomas making the call.

Edmonds: {4-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Thomas: {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

Following Edmonds' flush, he moves to 4,800,000 as Thomas slips to below two million.

Brent Thomas limped the button only to have Matthew Ephraums make it 275,000 to go from the small blind.

Once Brendan Edmonds folded his big blind, Thomas made it 780,000 total; which Ephraums called.

The flop of {j-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{J-Clubs} was checked round to see the {5-Clubs} land on the turn and a bet of 350,000 follow from Ephraums.

Thomas bumped the action to 850,000 and was met with an all in re-raise by Ephraums.

Thomas folded and Ephraums raked in the pot to climb to 5,600,000 in chips.
