Congratulations to Tamara Volkoff ($25,700), Event #5 - $240 No Limit Hold'em Champion!

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 24 01:08 am EST

Another day is done here at the Melbourne Poker Championships here at Crown Casino, and after 13 hours of play, Tamara Volkoff is not only $25,700 richer - she's now on her way home with the Event #5 - $240 No Limit Hold'em trophy!

Volkoff picked her moments carefully at this final table, and they paid off big time, particularly against her heads-up opponent Andrew Rogers. Even though he showed a great deal of resilience and held the chip lead for quite some time, Volkoff was able to spot his weaknesses, wear him down and eventually pull off a very convincing win with some very clever play. Congratulations Tamara, you deserve it!

A tip of the hat also goes to Andrew for his runner-up finish, plus all of our other final table contenders and to all those who cashed today. Well done everyone.

This concludes our broadcast day - be sure to tune in with PokerNetwork this Thursday from 12.10pm as we bring you the $5200 High Stakes No Limit Hold'em Event. Ciao for now!

Andrew Rogers Eliminated in 2nd Place ($19,200); Tamara Volkoff Wins!

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 24 01:04 am EST

With Tamara Volkoff having showed a flash of brilliance to wrestle the chip lead off Andrew Rogers, she came out swinging once again, this time pulling off a move right out of left field to steal the title!

Rogers limped in before the flop from the button and Volkoff called before check-calling Rogers' bet of 500,000 on the flop of {9-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}.

On the turn of the {a-Spades}, Volkoff led out for 500,000. For the first time on the final table, Rogers looked up directly at his opponent and spoke.

"All in," said Rogers.

Volkoff was beaming. "Let me check," she replied knowingly, glancing down at her cards and deliberately pausing before shouting, "I CALL!"

Volkoff: {5-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}
Rogers: {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}

"PATIENCE WINS REWARD!" she cried joyfully, high-fiving and hugging her friends on the rail. Rogers looked pale, knowing he had been outplayed and sat in stunned silence as the dealer turned up the {10-Clubs} to complete the board.

After 13 hours of play, we have a champion!

Tamara Turns Up the Heat

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 24 01:04 am EST

In what could be the turning point in this heads-up battle, Tamara Volkoff has now taken the outright chip lead with a very clever play against Andrew Rogers.

Volkoff made it 260,000 to go from the button and Rogers called from the big blind, before leading out for 500,000 on the flop of {q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{j-Spades}.

Volkoff thought for a while, then min-raised to 1,000,000. Rogers reluctantly called, then check-folded after Volkoff shoved for 2,100,000 when a repeat {J-Diamonds} came down on the turn.

Rogers is showing signs of concern, now down to 2.5 million while Volkoff is all smiles with over 4.1 million in her stack.

Chop Me Once, Shame on You, Chop Me Twice ... Shame on You

This heads-up battle between Tamara Volkoff and Andrew Rogers is going nowhere - fast.

In fact, we've had not one, but two successive split pots.

Rogers limped in from the small blind before the flop and Volkoff checked from the big blind. They then checked all the way down a board of {10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{2-Spades}{10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. No need to worry about what they had, they were both playing the board.

Volkoff then limped in from the button pre-flop and Rogers checked his option from the big blind before they checked the whole way down the board of {8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Rogers showed {j-?}{9-?}; Volkoff revealed {j-?}{10-?}.

Two pair, eights and fours, each with the jack kicker. Spectators dropped off the rail at an alarming rate, clearly frustrated with the heads-up battle they are witnessing. The rail was two-deep at the start of heads-up play - now we can count the crowd on one hand.

For the record, the chip counts still stand at Volkoff with 3,000,000 and Rogers with 3,600,000.

The Same Old Story

There's a pattern emerging here ... and we can't say we like it. Honestly, we have seen one flop. One.

Mark Evans Eliminated in 3rd Place ($15,000)

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 24 12:10 am EST

Mark Evans was looking grim with a stack of only 600,000, but he did manage to score a double up through Andrew Rogers before being sent packing at the hands of Tamara Volkoff.

Evans open-shoved from the button for around 1,300,000 from button, Andrew Rogers folded from the small blind and Volkoff called from the big blind.

Evans: {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}
Volkoff: {q-Spades}{3-Diamonds}

Evans lost the race after the dealer spread the board of {j-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and was off to collect his 3rd place prize money to the sum of $15,000. We’re now heads-up, and incredibly, Volkoff has managed to work her way back to around 3,000,000 in chips and is practically even with Rogers who holds 3.6 million. We could be here for a while, folks!

We're Now Burning the Midnight Oil ...

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 24 12:02 am EST

The final three players have been very, very reluctant to engage in any action as we tick over into Monday, but we did manage to catch at least one flop - which did turn into a full board - but there was no showdown.

Mark Evans folded on the button, Andrew Rogers limped in from the small blind and Tamara Volkoff checked her option from the big blind to go heads-up to a flop of .

It went check-check again on the turn of the , then Rogers fired out 175,000 on the river of the . Volkoff quickly threw her hand into the muck.

With that, the passive yet aggressive Rogers is now dominating this final table with 4.2 million in chips. Volkoff is in second chip position with 1.3 million and Evans is the short stack with just over 900,000.
