Recap of yesterday's events (NRL)2010 04 23
01:33 pm
Don't know if anyone cares but I had to write this for work so I thought I would post it here.

Just a list of what went down yesterday...

Suspicion is aroused at 9am when betting agencies receive an unprecedented amount of bets on Melbourne Storm to win the Wooden Spoon. Over ten minutes bets have been placed at odds greater than or equal to 200-1 for bookmakers to have to pay out nearly $60,000

By midday this price has been backed into 20-1. All betting on NRL futures in suspended.

It is announced that NRL CEO David Gallop will hold a press conference at 4pm.

News comes out that NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert has found three major areas where the salary cap may have been breached by the Storm. It is later revealed that these are:
1) Third party contracts with players containing an obligation to pay a greater sum than was lodged on their NRL contract.
2) Third party suppliers submitting inflated invoices to the club. (For example invoicing something worth $10,000 for $20,000. The $10,000 difference in funds would then be distributed to the players).
3) Some players having contracts which had different amounts on them than those registered with the NRL.

Five Melbourne Storm employees including Storm CEO Matt Hanson are stood down from the club.

At 4pm David Gallop Holds Press Conference in Sydney. It is announced that through a “long term system of effectively two separate sets of books” that the Storm have purposefully breached the salary cap to the tune of $1.7 million dollars over five years.
Gallop went on to say the “elaborate lengths they have gone through to cover this up have been extraordinary.”
“The most damming indictment is the systematic attempt made by persons within the club to conceal payments from the salary cap auditor and it would now seem certain from the board and owners on an ongoing basis.”

The Storm are stripped of their 2007 and 2009 premierships, their 2006, 2007 and 2008 minor premierships, all of their competition points to date in 2010 along with being forbidden from accruing any subsequent points this season- virtually assuring them the wooden spoon.

The Storm are fined $500,000 from the NRL and ordered to repay $1.1 million in prize money which will equally be distributed through the other 15 clubs.

Gallop announces that the Sea Eagles and the Eels- who were beaten by the Storm in the 2007 and 2009 grand finals will not be awarded the premierships.

News Limited (the owners of the Storm) CEO John Hartigan states there are a “couple of rats in the ranks” and fingers former Storm CEO Brian Waldron as the architect of the fraud.

News Limited announces that in response to the breach that:
1) Accounting firm Deloitte will be called upon to conduct a forensic audit on the accounts of the Melbourne Storm
2) Well regarded administrator Frank Stanton will be appointed as caretaker CEO
3) They will take further action on anyone else who is found to have been involved in the deception.

Melbourne Storm Chairman Dr Rob Moodie makes a statement.
“On behalf of the Melbourne storm I would like to sincerely apologise to our players, our staff, our sponsors, our members and our supporters. We will continue to assist the NRL with their investigation.”
“Today is an unbelievable blow and the darkest day in the club’s history.”
“We will endeavour to return this great club back to the great heights where it deserves to be.”
“We will repay our fans. The biggest sufferer here is our support base. They have not had any role in what has been uncovered here.”
“All we can ask is for them to remain resolute and loyal to the Melbourne Storm. We make the commitment that we will never ask them to ever experience anything like this in the future.”

At 6:30pm NRL futures betting markets are reopened. Melbourne Storm removed and the Dragons are listed as premiership favourites at $4.

Melbourne Storm fans show up at Storm HQ and dump club merchandise including jerseys, member tickets, signed footballs. Whilst many fans turn on the team others continue to show their support, pointing fingers at Waldron, and other administrators as opposed to the players and coaches.
Which teams do people think are over the salary cap?2010 04 23

Does anyone seriously believe the Storm are the only team guilty of this?

Which other teams does it seem likely are breaching the cap?

For the interest of conversation I will throw out a few which I think raise a few eye brows.

Eels
Tigers
Rabbitohs
Dragons
Titans
Panthers

I think some of them are borderline and some not so much, what do people think?

Thanks in advance
