| What are the odds? | 2010 03 31 11:40 pm | When I'm not writing and reporting for the good folk at PokerNews and PokerNetwork, I moonlight as a dealer for a pub poker company. I was dealing at a game out in Taylors Lakes tonight and I kid you not, this was the very first hand I dealt on my table: The blinds were at 25/50. Three players limp in preflop (UTG+1, middle position, hijack and button), the small blind completes and the big blind checks his option. The flop comes down ![]() ![]() - the small blind fires out 50, but then all hell breaks loose! All the other players move all in (except for the big blind and button). As each of them shoved their stack into the middle, the small blind player (on my immediate left) was begging me to look at his cards.Of course, as an impartial dealer I didn't, but I knew exactly what he had. What surprised me was all the other players' hands at showdown: Small blind: ![]() ![]() UTG +1: ![]() ![]() Middle position: ![]() ![]() Hijack: ![]() ![]() The turn and river brick out , - the small blind player KO's three players with the ten-high straight flush and cruises onto the final table from there.Which brings me to my question - is there anyone out there capable of crunching the numbers and revealing the odds of this situation actually happening (i.e. the odds of 11 of 13 cards in a suit being dealt out and then subsequently one of those hands hitting a straight flush on the flop)? |
| How NOT to report on the WSOP - Epilogue | 2009 12 03 09:34 pm | Some may remember this thread: How NOT to report on the WSOP It was an example of some terrible reporting on the WSOP Main Event final table by the mainstream media, focusing on Steven Begleiter's loss of "USD $22 million" (which were in fact the amount of tournament chips he had, which of course as we know have no cash value, but they were still converted into GBP ... o_O) However I only just remembered this link tonight, so I wanted to go back and have a second look. Upon reading said article, I'm pleased that the editor stepped in to correct the mistakes made. They've also included more examples of finance executives taking up the game, plus mentioning the two players going heads-up, so at least they've done their homework as well as their revision. Kudos to the UK Guardian. ![]() |

| How NOT to report on the WSOP | 2009 11 10 11:03 am | Just goes to show that reporting on poker should not be done by mainstream media. UK Guaridan report on Begleiter |
| You know you shouldn't play poker when ... | 2009 10 30 01:24 am | Simple really - complete the following sentence. You know you shouldn't play poker when ... ... you chase the whole way with a low pocket pair and get beaten, but somehow able to justify your actions because you were on a "trip draw". ... you play unsuited cards because you've got two flush draws. |
