Poker Strategy: What Makes Some Players Luckier Than Others?

1 comment ● 2010-05-16

We all know them, those players who tell us that they run bad and that they are the unluckiest people in the world. The constant stream of tears from people like this has made me wonder what makes one player luckier than another.

After pondering this point for a while and noticing which kind of players appear lucky and which type appear unlucky I have come up with the following conclusion. All players are equally lucky and unlucky. The ones that appear lucky just maximise their value a lot better.

It always appears that some people are a lot luckier than others. People look at the Mark Vos’, Jarred Graham’s and Jonathan Karamalikis’ of the world and assume that they are exceptionally lucky. It is human nature to attribute somebody’s success to luck. We all do it. The thing is though that we are often unable to notice and respect the skill behind this luck. The player might have found themselves in a lucky situation but what they have done from this spot is what separates them from the rest of the players. Yes a player is lucky to get good cards but it was his skill that extracted maximum value from the other players at the table. You will find over time I will get pocket aces just as often as Full Tilt Poker’s Phil Ivey. However you will find by his superior playing style his win percentage is phenomenally higher than mine. Am I unlucky, or is he better than me?

It isn’t just good cards that make great players seem lucky. Say you are in a tournament, the blinds are creeping up and you desperately need some chips. A good player will know when to raise and take down the blinds and antes regardless of what cards he is holding while a bad player will look down at his junky {9-Spades}{3-Hearts} and fold cursing his bad luck looking at the good player take in all of his chips thinking that he is the luckiest guy on earth.

This is just a couple of examples. There are many more. But if you feel you are unlucky all the time it may have a lot to do with one fundamental part of the game that you are playing incorrectly. Don’t be afraid to learn. There are great opportunities to talk to fellow players in the Hand Discussion forum and the Beginners Forum on PokerNetwork. Take your time to ask some questions, improve your game and you might find that shortly it is you that players are calling ‘the lucky one’ at the poker table.
