Ruling does suck for him but it's his own fault for saying call before the other guy bet any particular amount so no real sympathy.
Had a similar spot at treasury recently where my hand was ruled mucked even though the intention was to table it (card flipped face down as I tabled it) and villain was friends with the floor guy but I put myself in that situation so I had to live with it. This guy did the same. He made a mistake, put himself in the floors hands and now has to live with the consequences.
