Posted at 07:43 2012-04-07 by Matthew Pitt

In the opening round from Group A of the PartyPoker Premier League V in Vienna, Austria Tony G finished in fifth place from eight and earned four points but yesterday he went not one, not two but four places better and took down Round 2! this result earned him 16 crucial points and $32,000 in cash, propelling him to the top of the group standings at the halfway point.

From the off Tony G looked to be in the zone and he made a solid fold against fellow motor-mouth Luke Schwartz early on. Tony G raised to 6,000 with {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and Schwartz called in the blinds with {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. The flop came down {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} and Schwartz check-raised Tony G's 8,000 continuation bet to 22,000. Tony G call and the duo shared the {10-Clubs} turn, a card t hat both players checked. The river was the {4-Hearts} and Schwartz checked again but when Tony G bet 25,000 Schwartz check-raised again and made it 90,000 giving Tony G something to think about. He thought long and heard before correctly deciding he was beaten and he folded the overpair.

Things were not looking too good for Tony G until the midway point when he doubled up through British star Sam Trickett when his {A-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts} stayed in front of {A-Spades}{9-Spades} then shortly after that hand he sent Schwartz to the rail with {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} vs the Brit's {A-Spades}{10-Spades}.

His good run continued when he saw Trickett open shove with ten-six offsuit and discovered a pair of black aces staring back at him from the hole, then when Trickett shoved again shortly afterwards, this time with {K-Spades}{J-Hearts} Tony G made the call with a pair of deuces, which held, and he found himself heads-up against Erik Seidel.

Heads-up only lasted a few hands thanks to the large blinds playing their part. The final hand saw Seidel limp from the button with {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} and Tony G check with {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}. The flop came down {9-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{4-Spades}, Tony G checked, Seidel bet 60,000 then called when Tony G shoved all in. The turn was the {9-Hearts} followed by the {8-Hearts} river and with that Tony G had won Round 2 and is in pole position to progress to the finals now.
