World Series of Poker Europe Kicks Off Today

The poker world is braced for another fortnight of first class, high-octane poker as the World Series of Poker Europe heads to Cannes for the second consecutive year. With seven bracelet events on the schedule for 2012, this year's WSOPE could be the biggest and best yet as a whole host of stars descend on the French Riviera.

Today marks the start of the first event, the €2,700 Six Handed No Limit Hold'em tournament. This particular event is one of the most popular on the schedule and is a favourite of the online poker generation. Last year's event was the first time it had run and it still attracted a field of 360 who were eventually outlasted by Guillaume Humbert, who walked away with €215,999.

September 22 marks the start of anther popular tournament. At the WSOP in Las Vegas “one k” events are referred to as “donkaments” but not at the WSOP. Last year's €1,100 No Limit Hold'em event saw 771 players compete for a coveted WSOP bracelet but it was Australia's Andrew Hinrichsen who got his hands – or should that be wrists – on the sought after piece of poker jewellery and the €148,030 first place prize.

The other events on the calendar are the €5,300 Pot Limit Omaha (Sept. 24), the €3,250 No Limit Hold'em Shootout (Sept. 25), the €10,3450 No Limit Hold'em Split (Sept. 26), the €1,650 Six Handed Pot Limit Omaha (Sept. 27) and the crowning jewel, the €10,450 No Limit Hold'em Main Event (Sept. 30).

There is also a eagerly anticipated €50,000 buy-in High Roller event beginning on Oct. 02 that should be, as the kids say, sick. Some of the best players in the world are already registered and ready to play including Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Jason Mericer, Vanessa Selbst and Eugene Katchalov. It should be epic.
