One of the most eagerly anticipated live tournaments of the year, the 2013 Macau Poker Cup: Red Dragon Main Event, began yesterday at the Grand Waldo Entertainment Complex. The HKD$11,000 buy-in tournament, which boasts a HKD$3,000,000 guaranteed prize pool, attracts players from around the globe in their droves.
Day 1a of the MPC: Red Dragon Main Event started at 20:00 and played all the way through to the ungodly hour of 05:00! During this time the Red Dragon tournament saw a total of 253 players buy in, of whom only 70 managed to navigate their way through to Day 2.
Leading from the front is Russia’s Vyacheslav Kuzmin who bagged and tagged an impressive stack of 175,000 chips. His chip stack now contains over 40,000 more colourful and precious ceramic discs than his nearest rival, Hong Kong’s Enrico Chong (131,700).
Kuzmin may not be a household name yet, in fact he only has four major cashes on his resume at present, and they only add up to $18,535, but if he keeps up his current form in this event that could all change. However, there is a long, long way to go in the MPC Red Dragon event.
Joining Kuzmin through to Day 2 are a number of very talented individuals such as Australian pro Michael Marvanek. According to the PokerStars Blog, Marvanek was the first player to pass 100,000 chips thanks in part to him being paid off with the nut straight on a board reading . Marvanek finished Day 1a with 112,000 chips.
Also making it through to Day 2 was Team PokerStars Pro Raymond Wu (59,000) who has a very good record in Macau. You may recall Wu took down the 2010 edition of this very tournament, a result that bagged him HKD$664,000.
