Congratulations to Brendon Rubie ($118,000), Winner of the 2010 Melbourne Poker Championship Main Event!

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 10:12 pm EST

The crowds are gone, the table is empty and we're here all alone doing our usual wrap thing, but amongst the crowd up at the Vegas Bar, there is one very happy young man from Wollongong.

Brendon Rubie started the day with the chip lead, but had to battle his way through a very tough final table, eventually entering into a see-sawing battle with Minh Nguyen before taking down the title. Any of the 10 players that were here today deserved to win, but in the end, Rubie showed maturity and resilience beyond his years to taken down the top prize.

We should also point out that Rubie lives with 2009 APPT Grand Final champion Aaron Benton and 2010 ANZPT Adelaide Main Event champion Renne Carnevale. That's going to make for one helluva home game!

Congratulations Brendon on your win, and kudos to all our final table contenders today, it truly was a battle that lived up to all our expectations!

And on that note, this brings our time here at the Crown Poker Room to an end. On behalf of everyone here at PokerNetwork, thank you for sticking with us during the 2010 Melbourne Poker Championship. We now invite you to catch up with our good friends at PokerNews for all the latest from the WSOP in Las Vegas.

Until next time, thanks for stopping by – we’ll see you again soon!

Minh Nguyen Eliminated in 2nd Place ($83,780); Brendon Rubie Wins!

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 09:51 pm EST

Brendon Rubie raised to 225,000 from the button before the flop and Minh Nguyen called, before check-calling Rubie's bet of 225,000 on the flop of {a-Spades}{10-Hearts}{2-Spades}.

Both players checked the turn of the {7-Diamonds}and the river {8-Hearts}; Rubie showed {q-Spades}{8-Spades}for a rivered pair of eights, which was good enough to extend his chip lead to 7 million to Nguyen's 4.8 million.

In the very next hand, Nguyen raised to 225,000 from the button and Rubie called, before checking the flop of {a-Spades}{10-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. Rubie checked, Nguyen led out for 275,000 but Rubie check-raised to 775,000.

Nguyen called and the dealer produced the turn of the {9-Spades}, which saw Rubie fire out a bet of 1,050,000.

Nguyen moved all-in and Rubie snap-called, quickly rolling up {5-Spades}{3-Spades}for the flush. Nguyen was dumbstruck - he went to muck his hand in disbelief, but the dealer quickly picked up his cards and tabled them.

There was nothing that Nguyen's {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}could catch. He was dead in the water. The dealer burned and then dealt the river {j-Spades}to complete the board, but it mattered little to Rubie, who had already begun hugging and high-fiving his supporters on the rail.

Ladies and gentlemen, it gives us great pleasure to announce that Brendon 'Brendoor' Rubie is the winner of the 2010 Melbourne Poker Championship Main Event!

To and Fro They Go ...

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 09:42 pm EST

Brendon Rubie and Minh Nguyen are trading chips back and forth across the felt and the rail is now two-deep as this heads-up battle continues.

Nguyen raised to 225,000 from the button before the flop and Rubie called before both players checked the flop of {k-Spades}{2-Spades}{6-Spades}.

Rubie then check-called Nguyen's bet of 275,000 on the turn of the {6-Clubs}, before check-calling again after Nguyen's bet of 475,000 on the river {5-Diamonds}.

Nguyen tabled {j-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}for trip sixes, Rubie mucked and Nguyen briefly took back the chip lead.

In the very next hand, Nguyen raised to 225,000 from the button before Rubie three-bet it to 550,000. Nguyen called, but mucked after Rubie fired out 650,000 on the flop of {4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Clubs}.

Rubie is back out in front with 6.4 million while Nguyen slips to 5.4 million.

Minh's Not Going Anywhere

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 09:33 pm EST

Brendon Rubie was very, very close to winning this title, but Minh Nguyen has managed to stay alive, bringing the chip counts back to almost even.

Rubie raised to 225,000 from the button before the flop, but Nguyen re-raised to 525,000 from the big blind. Rubie called and the dealer produced a flop that read {7-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}.

Nguyen led out for 550,000, but Rubie re-raised all-in. Nguyen wasn't too pleased, eventually letting his hand go.

In the very next hand, Nguyen raised to 225,000 from the button, but Rubie re-raised to 550,000 to go from big blind. Nguyen snap-shoved for 2.6 million and Rubie insta-called.

Rubie: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Nguyen: {a-Diamonds}{7-Spades}

The flop of {q-Spades}{9-Hearts}{2-Spades}improved neither hand, but Nguyen scored more outs when the {j-Spades}bobbed up on the turn. Incredibly, Rubie hit his set of tens on the river - but unfortunately, it was the {10-Spades}- giving Nguyen the flush and the pot!

Nguyen is back up to 5.2 million while Rubie still holds the chip lead with 6.6 million.

Rubie Wins, Reset!

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 09:20 pm EST

Brendon Rubie raised to 225,000 from the button before the flop and Minh Nguyen called before leading out for 275,000 on the flop of {9-Spades}{q-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

Rubie called, then led out for 275,000 on the turn of the {2-Hearts}. Nguyen check-raised to 925,000 and Rubie called, then both players checked down the river of the {k-Spades}.

Nguyen showed {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}, but mucked after Rubie tabled {j-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}for a king-high straight. With Rubie now controlling the action, he's built his stack up to 8.25 million while Nguyen is down to 3.55 million.

It seems there's a new buzzword in poker - after Rubie wins a pot, his supporters only briefly clap and cheer before calling out, "Reset". Our guess is that it's an affirmation to make sure that Rubie clears his head before each new hand. It's definitely working!

Rubie Fights Back

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 09:08 pm EST

Brendon Rubie has just managed to wrestle back the chip lead from Minh Nguyen in this very tense heads-up battle.

Rubie raised to 225,000 from the button pre-flop and Nguyen called from the big blind, before check-calling Rubie's bet of 225,000 on the flop of {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{7-Spades}.

On the turn of the {5-Spades}, Nguyen checked to Rubie, who fired out a bet of 450,000. Nguyen folded and then in the next hand, raised to 225,000 from the button.

Rubie re-raised to 600,000 and Nguyen called, only to fold after Rubie led out for 700,000 on the flop of {9-Spades}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}.

As a result, Rubie is now up to 6.8 million in chips, while Nguyen is now on just over 5 million.

Nguyen Takes the Lead!

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 09:02 pm EST

In the space of two hands, Minh Nguyen has managed to double up and then take the chip lead off Brendon Rubie.

Nguyen raised from the button to 225,000 before Rubie re-raised from the big blind, making it 425,000 to go. Nguyen moved all in and Rubie called, showing {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}and was flipping for the tournament against Nguyen's {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}.

To Nguyen's delight, the {q-Spades}appeared in the window, with the {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}trailing behind to complete the flop. Needing a nine to take the title down, Rubie found no love after the turn and river ran out {3-Spades}, {8-Hearts}.

In the next hand, Rubie raised to 225,000 from the button and Nguyen called from the big blind before check-calling Rubie's bet of 200,000 on the flop of {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds}{5-Spades}.

Nguyen then led out for 375,000 on the turn of the {2-Spades}; Rubie quickly folded and Nguyen took down the pot.

Nguyen now holds 6.2 million to Rubie's 5.6 million. We've got a game on our hands, people!

Lucky Chop for Rubie

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 08:55 pm EST

Brendon Rubie raised to 225,000 from the button, only to see Minh Nguyen re-raise to 525,000 from the big blind. Rubie four-bet it to 1,025,000, Nguyen jammed the rest of his stack into the middle and Rubie snap-called.

Nguyen: {a-Diamonds}{a-Clubs}
Rubie: {a-Hearts}{5-Hearts}

Minh was in great shape to double up and still held his lead after the flop of {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, but the {q-Diamonds}came down on the turn, leaving Rubie with a slim chance to chop.

To his relief, the {k-Spades}spiked on the river and this heads-up game remains unchanged.

Rubie's Book Cripples Nguyen

Written by LandoCalrisian, 2010 05 31 08:50 pm EST

Minh Nguyen limped in from the button before the flop and Brendon Rubie checked to see a flop of {6-Spades}{8-Spades}{9-Spades}; Rubie led out for 135,000 and Nguyen called before they both checked the turn of the {a-Spades}.

Rubie then fired out 270,000 on the river of the {8-Diamonds}. Nguyen called, only to muck after Rubie showed down {6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}for a full house.

Rubie is up to 9,000,000 while Nguyen is now strugging with just 2,500,000.
