Sunday was UFC 109, and for degenerates like myself, another chance to invest some money on one guy beating the shit out of another guy. Mix in a couple of lazy beers, a bag of potato chips, and some blood, and you got the makings of a good day.
The day started with a weird twist of fortune. I placed a bet on Ronys Torres to beat Melvin Guillard on the undercard using one of my sportsbook accounts. I then checked one of my other bookmakers and decided to load up a little more. While concentrating on other things I stupidly confirmed a bet on Melvin Guillard.
Now I had a bit on both sides of the same fight, and with both fighters under even money, had booked a loss on the fight! It turned out to be an ok error after Guillard took what I will say was an interesting decision, despite Torres pushing the fight for the majority.
So I was down a little, but had a couple of underdogs up my sleeve. My main pick for the day was Paulo Thiago up against Mike Swick. Swick had taken the fight on short-notice and Thiago had an excellent record against Swick’s gym. So I hit up some Thiago action at $2.50, despite the experts being all over Swick. I then also decided to also book some action on Frank Trigg, as an underdog against Matt Serra, at $2.45.
The Trigg fight was the first on the main card and Trigg was pathetic dancing around the Octagon for a while, as Serra played with him, and then it was all over. The end result, Trigg out could on the canvas. It’s obvious that his UFC career is over.
Thiago went very well. You can check out the full fight here.
He scored a second round submission over Swick to at least get my day going back the right way. The blood bath fight of the day was the co-main event with Chael Sonnen scoring a bloody brutal decision over Nate Marquardt. Sonnen now gets a title shot in his division.
Finally the headline fight saw me hell bent to recover my losses on one of my books, and at a friend’s insistence that Randy Couture couldn’t lose to Mark Coleman I backed him as an almost unbackable favourite at $1.27. Thankfully Couture didn’t lose, but going balls out is not something I want to be doing with regularity.
In all it turned out to be a winning day, on a pretty poor UFC card for both betting and fan value.
The Super 14 season kicks off this weekend and I’m particularly looking forward to it. Last season I did ok early on in the season, before slumping the last four weeks or so. I’ll be keen to try and pick some winners this year. It's also only a couple of weeks till UFC 110 in Sydney. I didn't buy tickets, but it should be another fun day watching MMA.
