IASbet.com’s expert racing analyst previews another historic Derby Day meeting at Randwick, and a great weekend of sport
TJ Smith Stakes – Randwick Race 5
She’s now officially the world’s best racehorse, and it’s hard to see them stopping Black Caviar’s winning ways here, particularly at Weight For Age. The only query for her is racing in the right handed direction, though connections are not concerned by this. Interest surrounds the placegetters and once again Crystal Lily is likely to be in pursuit. Group One champ Shoot Out is first up after a long spring campaign and he’ll be hoping to build fitness with an eye to the winter features in Brisbane. Other place chances lie with Hay List, Shellscrape and Hinchinbrook.
Sires Produce Stakes – Randwick Race 6
Once again Smart Missile is out, which in the absence of Sepoy throws this race right open. Do You Think was impressive over this trip last week, and although this is a stiffer test he may be fresher than his opponents as he missed the hard run in the Slipper and some of those may be treating this race as an afterthought. Elite Falls finished well along the rail in the slipper to grab third and raced like the 1400m should suit. Helmet was sent to Melbourne and then scratched at the gates, but his form is excellent and he’s been set for this by trainer Peter Snowden. He’ll take a forward position and will be in it for a long way. Liked the run of Shared Reflections who was squeezed late in the Slipper and would have finished near Elite Falls, so she represents good each way value here.
Australian Derby – Randwick Race 7
Jimmy Choux is deserved favourite in this on the strength of his dominant win in the Rosehill Guineas. He’s already a Group One winner over this trip in New Zealand and is the one they all need to beat. He’ll settle midfield in the run and should be too strong. Victorian filly Shamrocker chased the favourite well last time and she’s proven to run a strong 2400m, given her second placing in the Oaks at Flemington. Another positive for her will be the improving track condition and the benefit of Glen Boss back in the saddle, with whom she has a great record. Another kiwi, He’s Remarkable, was sound in the Rosehill Guineas and has place claims along with I Think I Do and Light Brigade who should take a forward position.

AFL – Round 3
Round 3 commences with the Magpies ($1.26) unfurling their premiership flag against arch rival Carlton ($4.00) at the MCG. The Pies are warm favourites and welcome back skipper Nick Maxwell, while the Blues are assured of a tougher contest than the one provided last week by the Suns. On Saturday night, the West Coast Eagles ($1.91) host Sydney ($1.91) in a really tough match for punters. The Eagles have quietly put together 2 wins, albeit against lesser opposition than what the Swans will provide. The Swans have had two nail biters this season, and another one here wouldn’t surprise. Sunday’s twilight match between the Saints ($1.82) and the Bombers ($2.00) looks to be the match of the round. The Saints have been flat to date, are missing warrior Lenny Hayes, and face the challenge of a genuinely improved Essendon outfit who’ll be hungry to atone for the their narrow defeat last week. To add further interest to this match, the Bombers have a good record of late against the Saints.
NRL – Round 5
In an important match for both clubs sitting on 2 wins and 2 losses, the Tigers ($2.35) meet the Rabbitohs ($1.60) at Sydney Football Stadium. The Wests were thumped by the Roosters and will demand a stronger effort from themselves, while the Rabbitohs are gaining confidence on the back of their thrilling win over Manly. On Sunday the match of the round has the Dragons ($1.57) playing the Bulldogs ($2.40) in what should be a beauty. Both sides are coming off a loss and will be desperate to bounce back with victory. Monday night’s clash in Brisbane finishes the week with a big game between the Broncos ($1.70) and Knights ($2.15). The Broncos will be popular with punters, but tread carefully as the Knights have shown the ability to mix it with the best in the competition and have won their last three encounters with the Broncos.
