He was a man on the mission. 12 months ago Van Marcus sat at this very same table, with a mountain of chips and expectations of triumph weighing heavily on his shoulders. Unfortunately that day his massive chip lead was eaten up and he finished a disappointing 5th. Today was about redemption.

Six of the past eight World Champions have all hailed from the USA but this year it wouldn’t be a seventh as heads-up play is to be contested by a 22-year old Dane in Peter Eastgate and a 27-year old Russian in Ivan Demidov.
With play due to start at 10pm local time there would be some delay as Erick Lindgren was presented with his 2008 WSOP Player of the Year Award; a custom Harley-Davidson Motorcycle.

After 117 days the November Nine took their seats in the Penn & Teller Theatre to battle it out for the $9.1 million first prize, the coveted bracelet and title of the 2008 World Champion.
The first big hand came 18 hands into the final table where Dennis Phillips and Ivan Demidov committed over a third of their stack pre-flop, and when the board fell 
Demidov moved all-in over a small bet from Phillips to take the pot and cement his spot as clear chip leader as Phillips became the second short stack.

As attention turns to the World Series of Poker final table, due to take place on November 10th Australian time, the online poker community could well be forgiven for not catching as much of the hype as the rest of the poker world. The records were reset last weekend four times with the record for the highest online no-limit hold’em pot ever being broken four times over.

Last night at the Bellagio in Las Vegas Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier took down the $15,400 buy-in World Poker Tour Festa al Lago event besting a field of 368 players to take home the first prize of over $1.41 million and join Roland De Wolfe and Gavin Griffin as the third player to hold both a World Poker Tour and European Poker Tour Title.
