Australian Online Poker Rankings: Karamalikis Under Pressure From Wakeman
Posted at 13:45 2013-05-27 by Matthew Pitt
Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis has been the number one ranked online poker tournament player in Australia for what seems like an age, but cold that reign be on the verge of coming to an end?
Karamalikis currently has 6,773.84 points (according to PocketFives’ scoring system), a tally helped by him winning the $55 rebuy at PokerStars a few nights ago. The man with the inappropriate moniker is one of the most consistent players of his generation and in recent weeks has continued to add big score after big score to his already impressive list of poker accomplishments.
Hot on his heels, with 6,281.57 points, is Matt “mjw006” Wakeman, a former heads-up sit ‘n’ go specialist who is now a fully-fledged multi table tournament grinder. Wakeman seems to have rediscovered the form that saw him reach back-to-back final tables in the Super Tuesday tournament at PokerStars, and recent cashes include a 14th place finish in the SCOOP-14 M $109 Rebuy Big Antes event ($3,223), a fourth place finish in the SCOOP-21-H $2,100 No Limit Hold;em event ($74,866), a seventh place in the Full Tilt Poker T-Rex tournament ($4,838) and a runner-up finish in The Big $55 ($17,010).
Should Wakeman continue in this rich vein of form he will put Karamalikis under immense pressure and could even overtake him in the rankings.
Rounding out the top five places are Nurlan “Nur1ck” Boobekov who seems to constantly cash for decent amounts with the biggest scores eluding him – for now. Michael “WaGe N WaRz” Federsen is another who seems to be always in the money places, as does World Series of Poker Europe bracelet winner Andrew "FUZZBUNGLE” Hinrichsen.

Another man who is hot right now us Michael “m_hawk_1” Hawkins, known as “PapaGreggio” on PokerStars. Hawkins is grinding the SCOOP events among other PokerStars tournaments and has been doing rather well for himself. He bubbled the final table of the opening Medium SCOOP event for a $9,121 score then a few days later came second in a $22 No Limit Hold’em 1R1A for a further $5,144. Keep an eye out for his name as the SCOOP draws to a close and the WSOP approaches even more rapidly than before.
