IASbet.com’s expert racing analyst Gerard Twomey previews the huge Golden Slipper meeting at Rosehill.

Golden Slipper – Rosehill Race 7

Quality field in this year’s Slipper. Sepoy’s win in the Blue Diamond was the benchmark 2yo performance of the season and the question is whether he can repeat that effort twice in the one preparation. Smart Missile appears untapped and if he improves on his Todman win he’ll be very hard to beat. Foxwedge has improved each start, has blinkers on, maps well and looks set to peak on Saturday. Of the fillies, Elite Falls has the right profile. She’s another who’s improved each start and her victory in the Riesling shows the 1200m holds no fears for her. Salade burst onto the scene last week, but it looks a big task to win a Golden Slipper on the seven day back-up and he appears to be coming through a weaker form line.

BMW – Rosehill Race 5

Very good speed here with Mourayan and Zavite to make the pace. Maluckyday didn’t let down on the heavy in the Ranvet, but he’ll relish the good ground and with good speed expect him to be very hard to beat. Linton had blinkers for the first time and covered ground when second in the Australian Cup. He meets Maluckday 2.5kg better on their meeting in the Lexus and won’t be too far away here. Descarado is another who is fitter and suited at the 2400m given his Caulfield Cup triumph. Of the others Laristan is an improving young stayer and is worth consideration for the exotics.

George Ryder – Rosehill Race 6

Aloha has won her last 5 starts by big margins and is the deserved favourite again. Her dominant win in the Coolmore shows she has the Group One acceleration necessary to win a race of this calibre. Last year’s placegetters, Danleigh, Dao Dao and King Mufhasa all return to the scene of the crime and appear to be in good form again. Three year old Ilovethiscity only has a short sprint and from barrier 11, B. Avdulla will need to time his ride to absolute perfection.

AFL – Round 2

This week the action commences with the Saints ($1.26) going in as hot favourites to secure the 4 points from the Tigers ($3.90). The Sainters were pretty flat last week but we can expect a far more energetic performance against the Tigers. The most anticipated game of the round will no doubt be the historic first game for the Gold Coast Suns ($4.00).  History suggests that the new teams are extremely competitive first up, so the Blues ($1.25) are sure to be very careful not to let the Suns get off to a flying start. On Sunday, the Swans ($1.74) take on the Bombers ($2.10) who are full of confidence, while Sydney let a winning lead against the Demons, so will look to run this game right out. In the twilight game at the MCG, punters might look to the Demons ($2.90) for some good value where they are underdogs against the Hawks ($1.42). In contrast the Demons finished their match well last week, while the Hawks started well, only to let the Crows finish over the top of them.

NRL – Round 4

The Broncos ($1.40) welcome back legend Darren Lockyer who has announced his retirement at season’s end. His teammates will be determined to send him off in the right manner and in front of his home town fans, the Broncos should be too strong for the Jekyll & Hyde Panthers ($3.00). The Rabbitohs ($2.18) will take some confidence from their win last week and will be hoping to build momentum into the season as star recruit Greg Inglis should only continue to improve. They play an improved Manly ($1.70) who should not be underestimated and welcome back skipper Jamie Lyon from injury. On Sunday the Knights ($2.48) re-open their redeveloped stadium and host the reigning premiers St George ($1.55). The Knights have a few injuries which will make their task even harder, however the Dragons have mixed their form this year, so it makes for a fascinating battle. On Monday night, the Storm ($1.75) host ladder leaders Canterbury ($2.10), with the Storm expected to be much more competitive back at home.
