PokerStars and 888 Mobile Apps Pulled from Australian Apple App Store

The Australian government has succeeded in having the mobile poker apps of PokerStars and 888 poker removed from the Apple App Store. Although neither PokerStars nor 888 poker have commented on why their apps are not available to download in Australia, anyone attempting to find these apps while in Australia will be unable to do so.

It was a tweet from Michael “WaGe N WaRz” Federsen to PokerStars that first brought the situation to PokerNetwork’s attention, followed by one from Team Thumper.

The excellent PokerStars Mobile App was released in the United Kingdom on February 14, 2012 and released worldwide a month later. Until recently, Australian citizens have been free to download and play at PokerStars (and 888 poker) via the relevant mobile app, but this is no longer the case.

The Interactive Gambling Act of 2001 makes it an offence for online gambling companies to offer their services to Australians, but does not make it an offence for an Australian to partake in online gambling. Online poker has, until the pulling of these mobile apps, operated relatively freely and without any major restrictions.

PokerNetwork will continue to monitor the situation and report any findings.
