The second event of the 2010 PokerStars.net ANZPT kicked off today as the major Australian tour headed to the wild, wild west for the very first time, as the Burswood Entertainment Complex hosted the nation’s finest for a week of exciting poker action. A field of 83 players took to the felt today for flight 1A, with another 97 already registered for tomorrow’s flight. With last-chance satellites still being held at Burswood, the ANZPT Perth event is set to smash the previous record of 142 players for the biggest poker tournament in Western Australia.
The action kicked off with four-time WSOP bracelet winner and Australian Poker Hall of Fame Legend Jeff Lisandro uttering the immortal words, “Shuffle Up and Deal!” Today’s field included Lisandro, Nik and Aleks Lackovic, Andrew Jeffreys, Daniel Neilson, Peter Aristidou, Andrew Hinrichsen, Matthew Kirk, Singapore’s Ivan Tan, The Poker Star Amanda De Cesare, APPT Sydney champ Aaron Benton, ANZPT Adelaide champ Rennie Carnevale and PokerNetwork cult hero David Steicke all amongst the starters.
With seven one-hour levels played, the field was reduced to just 46 players with local player, Nik Lackovic, finishing atop the chip count leaderboard with 104,625. He leads Melbourne’s Kelvin Beattie (90,125) from two other Perth players – Jimmy Wong (77,925) and Aleks Lackovic (69,575) – and 2009 Aussie Millions $100k Hold’em Challenge champion David Steicke (61,300), who gave the field a two-hour start. Wong’s chips came courtesy of the last hand of the day when he shoved with K-7 chasing a flush against the flopped two-pair, aces and eights, of Sean Dunwoodie. Wong made his flush on the turn, and shot into the top five as a result. Dunwoodie remains in good shape on 53,800. Other notables who’ll return on Friday include Matthew Kirk (49,475), ANZPT Adelaide winner Rennie Carnevale (48,050), past Sapphire Series winner Lynn Brooks (47,200), Lizzie Clarke (38,450), Tim English (29,275), Jovo Scekic (27,350), Hugh Cohen (22,450) and Singapore’s Ivan Tan (16,660).
Australian Poker Hall of Fame Legend and Burswood poker ambassador Jeff Lisandro was rarely over the chip average but remains in contention with 20,100. Players to fall by the wayside on day 1A included Tom Grigg, Julian Cohen, Peter Aristidou, Nino Marotta, Amanda De Cesare, Octavian Voegele and Daniel Neilson.
Play recommences at Burswood Casino at 12.30pm local time tomorrow. It's expected that the total field will exceed 200 players.
