Racing – Australian Guineas and Chipping Norton Stakes expert racing analyst, Gerard Twomey previews the two Group One races this weekend with the Australian Guineas at Flemington and the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm.

Flemington Race 6 – Australian Guineas

We have a wide open Guineas for 2011 with a big field and plenty of chances, so luck in running will be crucial. Dusty Star and Run For Levi should set a good tempo. WA visitor Playing God has top Hong Kong based jockey Brett Prebble booked to ride and he looks like getting the run of the race. Bullbars found the line strongly to win the CS Hayes Stakes and the 1600m looks ideal. The lightly raced Under The Eiffel possesses a brilliant turn of foot and will appreciate the big Flemington track. Enjin Number Nine probably found the inferior part of the track last time and is worth another chance. Group One winning Kiwi filly We Can Say It Now has worked impressively since arriving while Adelaide filly Southern Speed who potentially looks to have the brightest future but unfortunately she’ll need luck from her outside gate. Very open race!

Warwick Farm Race 6 – Chipping Norton Stakes

Good speed expected here from Theseo, Once Were Wild and Lorne Dancer. Melito has excellent second up form and was very impressive winning the Apollo Stakes, she steps up to the 1600m and might need some luck from an outside alley. Theseo won this race last year and resumes here. First up at 1600m is a slight query although he has trialled well. Danleigh should be set to peak here third up while Maluckyday resumes from his excellent spring campaign including his brilliant second in the Melbourne Cup. He could be anything this preparation and creates plenty of interest. Luen Yat Forever had no luck in the Orr when first up for Peter Moody but has claims on his 4th in the Emirate last spring over this trip. Once Were Wild got outpaced in the slow tempo of the Apollo but if she takes up the running in this she’s quite capable of controlling the race and causing an upset.

Cricket World Cup – Sri Lanka V Australia

The Sri Lankans play the Aussies in what will certainly be Australia’s biggest test so far in the tournament. Sri Lanka will be very keen to win here having slipped up against Pakistan earlier. Gun bowler Malinga bagged six wickets and a hat trick against the Canadians and will be looking to rip his way through the Aussie’s top order. Australia have had ‘spot fixing’ allegations to deal with as well as the debate over who should replace the injured Doug Bollinger for this tournament. Despite this, their amazing unbeaten run in world cups is expected to continue by many punters.

The other big match to keep an eye over the weekend is between England and South Africa, where the English will be hoping to put behind them their embarrassing loss to Ireland while the South Africans look to continue their impressive form and confirm themselves as leading contenders in the tournament.

The semi finals are upon us now in the pre-season cup. In an odd fixture, the Bombers meet the Saints for the second time in a fortnight, but the match should be entertaining with the young Bombers growing in confidence and snatching a draw in the previous encounter. The Saints will be favourite with punters but James Hird’s team do look a better unit and shouldn’t be discounted. In the other match, Collingwood are expected to take an inexperienced team of youngsters across to Perth to play the West Coast on Saturday night.
