Stars Set Sail for Sydney

Posted at 17:48 2010-04-15

There was a time when Aussies had two choices for tournament poker - Crown or Overseas. With the advent of the ANZPT and a vigorous improvement program undertaken by Star City in Sydney, those days are most certainly a bygone era.

Star City has improved so much in a short period, and as their fourth APPT Grand Final rapidly approaches in December, they now boast three annual poker championship series events, a weekly card of tournaments that satisfies the local’s appetite, and more player friendly rules and staff. They have even organised special accommodation rates for poker players. The casino continue to strive to bring players an ever improving product and they have been more than successful at this to date.

Sydney now has a thriving local card community, which is now competitive with their traditional rivals in Melbourne. With the increased exposure and attention for poker at Star City they have formulated two additional poker series’ which appear on the calendar – the Sydney Poker Championships (September) and the ANZPT Sydney (April).

The ANZPT Sydney series got underway with flight one of what is sure to be a bumper opening event. For $330 players started with 10,000 chip stack, and 40 minute levels. The event is expected to prove so popular that if you missed entry today, you can get down to the Casino tomorrow for flight two.

The schedule also features Pot Limit Omaha, and as many different formats of NL Hold’em tournaments as you can probably think of. Some of the formats include six max, shootouts, heads up, and teams.

There is also a sure-to-be-popular High Rollers Event with a $10,200 buyin. Sydney’s Daniel Neilson is the defending champion in that event. The main event will run from April 21-25 and will be a $2,200 buyin with a cap of 500 entrants. PokerNetwork member Paren “Puzz” Arzoomanian will return to defend his title, which earned him $246,500 last year.

Players keen on satelliting into any of the ANZPT events should check out PokerStars as well as the variety of options available at the host casino.
