Hi mate,
Think seriously on this before you do it. I was retrenched about a year ago from a finance role with similar sort of cash. I basically took a year off and played a tonne of poker (and drinking and fishing).

From a familys point of view, you are home 24/7 but playing online you are not focussed on anyything else, so you are only half there. Assuming you are playing tournaments, when wife asks for help on some trivial thing and you are on the bubble and tell her to wait, this causes friction. The kids want to play, but you are on a FT, etc etc.

You'll need to take into account withdrawals for life expenses. I would walk into it assuming you will be break even (at best) for 6 months. You need to a bank a/c (not a bankroll) to accomodate this without having any impact on your family.

Assess your chances of returning to work if Poker doesn't work out so well.

Have you got leave stacked up? can you take 3 months off without quitting. (Then quit if it is working out).

I returned to work, simply because I could make a lot more than I was playing poker, obviously this is player depenent though.

2009
Got my first few decent (>$1k) MTT scores at the start of the year, played more midstakes and binked a $26 on FTP for $8k in April. Loved MTTs, loved life.
Then proceeded to swong badly for the next 5 months (while also taking out more than half my roll for real life expenses). Hate MTTs, still liking life tho :-).
Rediscover SNGs & bonus whoring on euro sites. Finally make some money at poker again while trying to stay away from MTTs.

2010
1. quit MTTs.
2. grind SNGs/SNG MTTs.
3. ????
4. profit.

2009- this has been my first year playing poker, got introduced to the game by a friend and started playing pub poker, quickly realised that this wasnt the way to go, began playing alot of cashies at star city and quickly built a solid bank roll, moved into online poker which has seen me demolish a fair amount of my roll, still trying to find a comfort zone in the online world. have read alot about stratergy and BR management in order to help me out, have to say thankyou to alot of the members on here for helping me out & pulling my head in for me, you know who you are

2010- plan on griding out alot more 1/2 & 5/10 at star city & enter alot more live tournaments (star city, crown), main aim is to build a roll close to $10,000. aspire to win a seat to ANZPT or APPT or similar tourney. try to qualify for 2011 AU millions.

Great thread risk. Really interesting to read everyone's progress and goals.

2009:

- Started off donking around a couple of years back until I decided to get a little bit more serious.
- Came on here and got some great advice about ways to improve my game. I was only really playing micro SNGs and MTTs but as of a few months ago have switched primarily to 6max NLH cash. With a 20 buy-ins rule I'm currently playing 10nl at break even.
-Because of my f/t job, gf and other commitments, I've found it hard to get in good volume, as well as putting aside the time to study the game by watching videos and posting hands etc, but I am working hard at it and plan on finding ways to better utilise my time.

2010:

- More volume
- More studying
- Find more local people to run hand discussions/sweat sessions with (hit me up on msn!)
- Move up to 200nl
- Coaching
- Learn to play other games such as Omaha (i'm a sucker for swings)

I wish you all the best of luck for the rest of the year and for next year too!
