Aussies Online May: Six Figure Scores On The Menu!

Posted at 12:57 2010-06-05

May was a monster month for online poker with three of the premier online tournament series hosting events during the month. The conclusion of Full Tilt Poker’s FTOPS XVI spilled into the first few days of May, and ran co-currently with the PokerStars SCOOP series. Throw in the mini-FTOPS XVI which followed its full size counterpart five days later and you had some big work days for the online tournament pros.

They made the most of the bumper fields with some huge scores and astounding achievements heading the way of some Aussie players during the month.

Jay “Seabeast” Kinkade put up a record month by an Australian online. No Aussie has ever earned $334,458 in a single month, and it will be a titanic challenge for anyone hoping to catch that. The marquee win for Seabeast’s month was in the $1,050 high stakes rebuy event at SCOOP. This tremendous victory earned him $205,110 and a commemorative SCOOP watch. But he wasn’t finished.

There would be $39,750 for taking down the Ultimate Bet $150k Guaranteed. Another $18,582 when he finished second in the Party Poker $100k guaranteed and five more earners around the five figure mark. No one could touch the guy in May!

Ben “CNT_Crusher” Delaney’s jaw-dropping achievement of going agonisingly deep in the High stakes and Medium stakes main events of the SCOOP series is definitely something that may never be achieved again.

Delaney’s epic runs concluded with ninth and tenth place finishes for a combined $115,000. While the six figure haul was good, it’s astounding to think just how much bigger that score could have been had his run not be cut down where it was.

Also in the SCOOP Medium Main Event was Octavian Voegele, an overseas player residing in Adelaide.  Voegele took down the biggest individual score by an Australian-based player during the month with $211,312 coming his way for a fourth place finish.

Normally three guys over the six figure mark would be considered pretty huge. But May just blew everything out of the books when Steve “StevoL” Leonard smashed out a $200,000 month. A five baggy of five figure scores was just the medicine for Leonard who has been reasonably quiet on the online scene for the best part of a year. But he came back with a vengeance clocking up a runner up finish in the Ultimate Bet $150,000 guaranteed for $62,250, and backed this up wins in the PokerStars $162 buyin NL Hold’em, the UltimateBet $75,000 guaranteed, and the Party Poker $50,000 guaranteed. It was a phenomenal month for Leonard.

James “Andy_McLEOD” made it five over the $100,000 mark with his $116,222 in earnings. Obst got second in the SCOOP HORSE event, along with some consistent finishes in some of the events to pull himself into six figureland.

Ridiculously, Jonathan “xMONSTERxDONGx” Karamalikis earned $92,117 during the month and barely rates a mention, while Callum “c-biz-kid” Ford final tabled the mini-FTOPS Main Event and earned $52,401 for fourth amongst all of these achievements. A congratulations is also in order for Andrew "Higher Wattage" Watson who shipped a Triple Crown amongst the carnage as well.

It was just a record-shattering month for Aussies online and something that is sure to assist their bankrolls some upcoming runs at the World Series of Poker. The latest Aussie rankings have Jonathan Karamalikis on top with James Obst sitting in second. Jay Kinkade’s record haul has him lurking in fourth and it will be interesting to see whether the competitive fires will burn in him to make another run at the top of the rankings. On the world leaderboard Karamalikis is the only Aussie in the top 100, ranked 37th in the world, while Obst is on the fringes at 115th.
