Players Come Together For Blue September

Posted at 12:00 2010-08-18

SKYCITY Auckland will once again play host to the second annual SKYCITY Blue September Challenge of the Codes poker tournament.  The popular event is being hosted by Lee “Final Table” Nelson and held as part of the Blue September campaign aiming to raise awareness of prostate cancer and funds for the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Nelson is New Zealand’s most well known poker player and as a prostate cancer survivor, this cause is close to his heart. Before taking up poker as his main hobby, Nelson was a doctor in the United States and has also written a book about the disease.

Local rugby players will take to the tables along with businesses who have sponsored them in a bid to take away the title of the 2010 SKYCITY Blue September Challenge of the Codes Champion. Funds are being raised through the generous support of sponsors including Coffee Club, Lion Red, Speights, Coverstaff Recruitment and SKYCITY Auckland who will play alongside ‘their’ player at the table.

Ejaaz Dean, SKYCITY’s General Manager of Casino Operations, is looking forward to bringing the tournament back to SKYCITY Poker saying, “This tournament is a great way to promote Blue September to the men of New Zealand and the women behind them who are an essential motivating force in the prevention of the disease. Poker is an exciting and growing sport and we are privileged and excited to be hosting this great event in support of the Blue September campaign.”

“We are pleased to see Auckland Rugby and the Vodafone Warriors joining us in support of the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation for a second year and of course appreciate the sponsors who have already pledged their support,” added Dean.

The winning player and sponsor along with SKYCITY and Lee Nelson will present the cheque to the New Zealand Prostate Cancer Foundation at the close of the tournament.

Members of the public (over 20 years of age) can bid for seats at the table in a Trade Me auction going live on 1 September. Bidders will be able to bid on a signed Auckland Rugby jersey or a signed Vodafone Warriors jersey, five seats in the tournament for them and four friends including food and beverage for the night.

About Blue September

Each year, over 2,500 men in New Zealand are diagnosed with prostate cancer. A further 600 will die from the disease.  Prostate Cancer is a preventable disease. It is estimated that on average at least half of those annual deaths could have been avoided had the sufferer sought advice from a health professional in a timely manner.

Prostate cancer can be cured if detected and treated early while still confined to the prostate gland. The tests for prostate cancer are the prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the digital rectal examination (DRE). These tests do not give a conclusive diagnosis of cancer but can indicate the presence of prostate cancer. While prostate cancer is most common in men over the age of 50, younger men with a history of prostate cancer in their family are at greater risk.
