137 entrants hit the Jupiters Hotel & Casino today for Day 1a of 2010 ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event, and by the end of eight levels of play, nearly half of the field had been eliminated with 69 players surviving the day.

It was a stellar lineup that included the likes of Vesko Zmukic, Liam Moffett, Tom Grigg, Joel “StrongPlay” Dodds, Antonis “Toothpick Tony” Kambouroglou, Daniel Neilson, Grant Levy, Ricky Kroesen, 2009 Aussie Millions champ Stewart Scott, 2010 ANZPT Adelaide champ Rennie Carnevale, defending ANZPT Queensland champion Scott Kerr, the newest ANZPT champ in Queenstown winner Julian Cohen and New Zealand’s first WSOP bracelet winner Simon Watt.

The field was also graced with by the presence of Australian Poker Hall of Famer and the Godfather of PokerNetwork, Maurie “The Master” Pears.

It was a rough day for many players with several big name players falling to brutal bad beats, none more so than Jackie Glazier’s pocket aces being cracked by an opponent’s pocket queens in the first level of the day.

Others to fall during the carnage included Dale Marsland, Stewart Scott, Hugh Cohen, Grant Levy, Simon Watt, Rennie Carnevale and Vesko Zmukic.

Joel Dodds was one who was able to navigate through the field, to continue his love affair with the warmth of Queensland. A few sets gave Dodds a stack to buffer a couple of late hits as he made it through the day in good shape with 67,975 chips.

He’ll be joined in day two by defending champion Scott Kerr, who turned things around when his {ac}{kc} spiked an ace to crack Bruno Da Silva’s{kd}{ks}. Kerr carried that momentum all the way to a top ten stack of 70,250 by the day’s end.

Ricky Kroesen (81,425), Dave Allan (82,825), Brad Bower (85,550), Nuno Da Silva (85,600) and Tom Grigg (86,450) were all strong throughout the day but the end of day chip lead went to PokerStars qualifier Shivan Abdine who bagged up 99,025 as 69 players made it safely through to day two.

Others who successfully made it through the day include Andrew Watson (49,050), Maurie Pears (48,675), Tim English (43,650), Liam Moffett (40,625), Julian Cohen (33,475) and Jai Kemp (19,625).
